This has been going on for hours now - or just for me?

I have deleted cookies and no change.

We're making it a strong cuppa and hope to have it back up and running shortly. Please check back in a few moments.

Still getting this Error Message and nothing I have tried has made it go away.

Is this happening for everyone or just me?

Try using DuckDuckGo

Bosky · 02/03/2026 20:00

It would be a major hassle changing browser just so that Mumsnet Notifications Page doesn't throw up a 500 error.

Why do you think that it would make a difference?

How is it hassle? Just download the app.

Bosky · 02/03/2026 22:31

I use a Brave, a Chrome-based browser, with several productivity add-ons and features that are only available on Chrome or Firefox.

For this reason, I no longer use Safari, iCab (which is based on Safari) or Opera.

I do not know if these features or add-ons, or their equivalents, are available for DuckDuckGo. If they are, it would be a hassle customising DuckDuckGo so that it replicates the functionality of Brave in the way that I have customised Brave.

I have already tested the Mumsnet Notifications page in Safari and I get the same 500 Error.

I am willing to download DuckDuckGo to see if it makes any difference but it seems a strange suggestion that this issue could be browser-based.

I am wondering why you think that using DuckDuckGo in particular, over any other browser, would solve this problem.

What is it that is special about DuckDuckGo? 🤷‍♀️

Correction. I have set iCab to be identified as Safari - it is not Safari-based.

Wow now that’s what I call complicated.

The reason I recommended DDG is because most MN problems seem to be caused by an overload of ads which it puts a stop to.

It’s entirely up to yourself. I was trying to be helpful in the absence of any response from MNHQ but you do what you feel is best.

Bosky · 03/03/2026 00:42

No, thank you for the suggestion and the explanation. I don't see any ads using Brave anyway.

Now using DuckDuckGo but the same problem - this is very weird!

It's like a bizarre Browser hijack that keeps showing me that version of the Notifications page - which I assume looks fine to you?

But it is happening across multiple browsers.

I will try running Malwarebytes to see if it picks anything up.

Hello @Bosky thanks for letting us know. A 500 error usually indicates a server-side issue rather than anything on your device, so clearing cookies won’t make a difference. We'll look into this now but please let us know if it's still happening.

Bosky · 03/03/2026 10:41

Thank you. Yes, the error message clearly says that it is a server side issue.

What seemed very odd was if it was only me who was having a problem due to a server side issue.

Pleased to see that you have fixed it!

Thank you 👍

Oh No! It is back again! That didn't last long.

Hello @Bosky is this happening on every page you try and visit? If not, please let us know which page it happened on and approx what time. Can we ask you to also please try and access MN in incognito/private mode (to rule out a browser cookie issue). Also please try mobile data vs Wi-Fi and let us know if that makes a difference. We'll do our best to get to the bottom of it.

Bosky · 03/03/2026 11:29

It is just the Notifications Page.

I have tried all those things (except mobile data because I am on my laptop) and none of them made any difference.

It was back to normal about 40 mins ago then it went off again.

Hi again @Bosky. We think we might have fixed this now. Can you let us know if all is ok at your end now?

Bosky · 04/03/2026 10:52

Hi Hebe,

It flipped to and fro for a while between working OK and showing me the 500 Error Page but seems to have stabilised with resumption of normal service 👍

I have had to use the Mumsnet mobile app a couple of times in the last few days, normally blue moon events, and was surprised to see that the app does not include a "Notifications Page" like on the website. So I was spitting double tacks for a while 🤭
