Pop-ups

Please will mumsnet never use pop-ups as a form of advertising? Another site I visit far less often now is using them more and more often (the irritating kind you can't block with a pop-up blocker) and they're vile!

We don't accept pop ups as a rule for the very reason that mumsnetters complained when we did!

HunkerMunker · 25/01/2005 17:24

Fantastic! Nice to see that a parenting website listens to those who use it

Am i the only one getting an irritating "win £500 in Sainsburys" pop up when i open MN and click on Active conversations then??

Aero · 07/02/2005 13:41

No - I'm getting something too though my pop-swatter gets it, but that noise is annoying too! Could well be the Sainsbury's one.

milge · 07/02/2005 14:37

just had it again, its a popup from utarget.co.uk

Justine (mumsnet) · 07/02/2005 16:04

Hi folks,
We have indeed accepted a pop-under (not pop-up - it opens underneath the page you're looking at). It is capped at once per day per user and is not on the talk pages - just home and other pages. In other words - you only have to close it once and it's not in your face. If you just use talk (which many do) you won't see it at all. We thought this might just be tolerable to folks... and obviously it brings us a bit of revenue. What do you reckon? Can we keep it? Please?

roisin · 07/02/2005 16:19

I've no objections Justine. Perfectly tolerable.

JanH · 07/02/2005 18:12

Justine, would it be possible for you to list at the top of the talk pages (in a non-annoying non-popping way ) all the shopping links that are currently on the home page (and remove them when they pop off again)? I've just been for a look, and I have recently bought from at least 4 of the sites there, but didn't go through your links because I didn't know they were there

SoupDragon · 07/02/2005 18:14

Might it be better to have a "shopping links" link instead?

milge · 07/02/2005 18:14

Justine, i have blocked the popups since this started happening, and i'm up to 9 today - it keeps coming up when i finish addiing to a chat and go back to Active Conversations.Am all for increasing revenue for MN, but the Once per userper day would be fine. Maybe is just me thats having problems?

Justine (mumsnet) · 07/02/2005 18:36

That's wierd Milge - definitely supposed to be capped at once per day and shouldn't be on talk at all. I'll see if Tech can shed some light as to why this is happening to you. Is it happening to anyone else?
And JanH and Soupdragon - we'll think about the affiliate thing - maybe a shopping links/ affiliate partners button is the way to go... then we can have them all listed the whole time (as there are more partners than we currently have room for on the site). Will get back to you on this. Thanks v much for thinking of us.

Twiglett · 07/02/2005 18:39

gawd you are unfailingly nice you mumsnet originator-bods aren't you?

don't you ever feel like just saying 'its mine all mine and I'll do what I want with it'

HunkerMunker · 07/02/2005 18:41

If I was buying from one of your affiliates, I'd definitely click-thru MN.

And I have no probs with a one-a-day pop-under Not that you need my permission - lol!

littlemissbossy · 07/02/2005 19:10

LOL I wondered where that little blighter came from earlier today! can't remember what it was for TBH, just clicked it away immediately
I agree, it's your site do what you like

Justine (mumsnet) · 07/02/2005 21:03

Twiglett, you made us smile round here. Truth is without you lot mumsnet would not amount to very much so at the very least we think you deserve a say.

milge · 09/02/2005 17:33

justine, have sent an email to [email protected] as i'm now up to 40+ blocked popups/under since my last post. Get them whenever i swap pages on MN. maybe something on my pc? hope tech can shed some light on it. thanks

Justine (mumsnet) · 09/02/2005 18:06

Hi Milge,
What a pain for you - hopefully Tech will have some suggestions. Will collar him as soon as he's back from Germany.

HunkerMunker · 10/02/2005 22:21

When you get the pop-up, what does it say across the top of the window (like where it says Mumsnet Discussions on this page)? I've seen two on family PCs recently - belgiandip and ilead.itrack. If you google the text, often you'll find a support website (like MN but for computer people!) with instructions on how to remove it. HTH a bit.
