Quoting the op

NigellaAwesome · 17/01/2026 22:30

There have been previous threads about this, including one from me.

I find it intensely irritating that posters quote the op, especially when it is a long one. And to top it off, the reply is frequently just one line. It means scrolling through the same OP time and time again. I think it is fair enough to assume that everyone on the thread has read the op, so there is no need to keep quoting it in reply.

About a year ago? MN said they had organised a fix to prevent this from happening, but it seems to have been reversed.

What’s the position with this?

They fixed it many months ago for plenty of us.

It now looks 'collapsed' when someone quotes the OP.

But many people have said it's not fixed for them so I wonder why?

Do you use the app?

notatinydancer · 17/01/2026 22:36

Not fixed for me on the app. It drives me mad , a huge long post and they quote it and write a one word answer 🤬

DameOfThrones · 17/01/2026 22:48

Can you not use desktop @notatinydancer?

I tried the app a few times a couple of years ago and it was shite for so many reasons.

From what I read on MN, it hasn't improved much.

notatinydancer · 17/01/2026 22:53

Yes I could give it a try.

ChestnutGrove · 17/01/2026 22:59

I use the website version on my phone and it looks like this so doesn't bother me

I thought it was fixed by collapsing it

Not on the app

ItsPronouncedThroatwobblerMangrove · 17/01/2026 23:05

I wouldn’t want the ability to quote the OP to disappear altogether - you know how frequently threads derail into side discussions and tangents, and then often a new poster will come in after a lot of unrelated discussion, and want to respond to the OP, and that wouldn’t be obvious without the ability to quote the post they are replying to, so would be more confusing and annoying.

NigellaAwesome · 20/01/2026 06:02

I use the app and it isn’t fixed on that.

What are the advantages of the app, I've tried it and couldn't see any reason to keep using it when the mobile site is far better

I thought the same when I tried the app

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 20/01/2026 22:11

Everything about the app is a sack of shit so it doesn't surprise me that this also doesn't work on it!

Use the mobile site instead. It works like a dream and collapses the OP when quoted.

I hate the app but a couple of months ago the site became totally unusable on my phone, so I converted to the app but there’s so much that doesn’t work.

on the plus side I waste much less time on the site than I did

I have so many problems using mobile site on an iPhone - it’s unusable for me.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 20/01/2026 22:27

I think it can sometimes be useful if the thread runs to several pages, because you can't easily scroll up to check exactly what it was the OP said that the poster is replying to.

The website won't let me use it unless I disable my ad blocker.

Morning, everyone. Yes, this feature isn't available on the app we're afraid - just on the main site. If anyone's having trouble with it on the main site though, please let us know and tell us what device and browser you're using. Thanks!
