I’ve just received the MN newsletter

But to an email address I don’t use for MN. I might have used it at one time, before Jeffrey and his hacking carry-on in 2015.

But then we were told not to use our ‘proper’ email addresses any more in case it happened again. So why is an email address that is not my MN email address getting newsletters? Also, I don’t subscribe to it in the first place. 👀

Me too.

Newsletter received last night to a proper named account I havent used since 2015 (switched after the great hack).

What's going on Mumsnet?

QueenClinomania · 26/10/2025 11:41

Crikey. I thought they deleted data during deregistration.

RightThenRightAgain · 26/10/2025 14:05

Yes, that’s my concern. The email address is my proper one and I also thought that data was deleted.

Me too. I did the same. Like a numpty my first email was my full name. I reregistered using a mumsnet specific email.

RightThenRightAgain · 26/10/2025 18:02

They told us at the time, as far as I can remember, to use a secondary email or one we opened specifically for MN. So why, if they could not keep our ‘proper’ emails safe do they still have them?

@MNHQ did you secretly keep our data when you said you'd deleted it?

ChristmasFluff · 27/10/2025 09:03

There have been so many things recently that have damaged trust and decreased activity on the site, you'd think that Mumsnet would be swift to reply to a thread like this, even if only to say they are taking this seriously and looking into it.

Hi everyone - can we ask that you get in touch with us directly at [email protected] and let us know what email address received the newsletter? Our mailing lists have not changed and so we're keen to find out what's happened.

So confirm with you an email address that you aren't supposed to have. Then you will definitely have it!

I was never on the list for the newsletter in the first place. There must be a way of cross referencing the addresses that got last weeks email against a list of who is signed up for it.

Hi there @RightThenRightAgain - we can't check why you received the mail unless we know what it is - your mail to us would be treated in confidence and we wouldn't store details of it. When a user deregisters, their email address is removed in that process. You can also sign up for newsletters without a MN account. We would be able to see all of this if we know where it was sent.

But if what you say is true, then they definitely have your email address anyway.

I’ve just checked the email addresses that I’ve used in the past for mumsnet and haven’t had any emails from them since I deleted my accounts, one in 2020 and one in 2023.

EmeraldRoulette · 27/10/2025 15:46

This is annoying me and I didn't even get the newsletter

@BeckyAMumsnet surely the procedure here is to check where the newsletter went and where you obtained that data? Then you can see where the problem is without anyone having to hand over their email address.

Well, yes it’s true.

If I was going to lie I’d think of something better than receiving an email from MN using an address that was supposed to be deleted ten years ago.

Deleting or changing your email address in 2020 and 2023 is nothing to do with the hacking that happened in August of 2015.

Then as I said, if it’s true, there is no problem giving them the email address because as you have said, they already definitely have it!

DidSheJustSayThat · 27/10/2025 18:08

I’ve just checked my email address that I changed after the big hacking debacle years ago and I haven’t had anything from mumsnet since I deleted it. Since the hacking, I regularly delete my account and start a new one with a different email as I don’t have any trust in them but I have never received any emails from them once I’ve deleted.

If this happened to me @RightThenRightAgain, I would give them the email address. They must have it anyway for you to have received the email and they probably won’t investigate without it.
