Strange black box

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 17/10/2025 07:39

On another thread my text appeared in a strange black box. I”m trying to replicate it here.

I started each sentence with a 3 space indent - to make it look like bullet points.
Didn’t look at preview as why would I.
All the indented text was white in a black box.
Edited it to remove the spaces and it went back to normal.

Intrigued to see if it works here, preview is normal,

Edit: it needs a 4 space indent. How strange.

Hi OP

Thanks for flagging this.
We'll be back to post once we've had a closer look.

Hi again OP,

So that box is actually the way the Talk system formats text that’s been indented. If you start a line with three or more spaces, the site’s code parser thinks you’re trying to post a bit of computer code, so it automatically puts it in a black box with a monospaced font.

If you remove the leading spaces, your text will go back to normal. If you type 'enter', then dash: - and then space, you'll get bullet points.

Thanks, I think it is a fun quirk. Might be useful to add emphasis to a post!

  • good to know about bullet points as well.
