Posters who have PMs blocked

If I send a PM to a poster who has their PMs blocked, will I get a message telling me that they don’t receive them?

Hi BIWI

The private message won't send - it'll display a message regarding invalid username or something along these lines. Are you having issues contacting a poster?

BIWI · 30/09/2025 17:34

Well I guess the issue I’m having is lack of a reply @LilyMumsnet! Which is fine. I know they will have the message now, as I didn’t get any message regarding an invalid username or whatever.

Thanks for letting me know.

Depending on what app they are using, they won’t get notifications or anything.

I have an app that works brilliantly but has no messages or notifications. I alternate between that and browser, depending what I’m doing.

JJZ · 30/09/2025 17:46

Yes, as said above it comes up with “invalid username” or similar. You wouldn’t even get as far as being able to type a message.

Blocked accounts sometimes still appear “live” but they’ll never see it.

Perhaps the user you have PM’d just has not logged in since?

I only see PMs on the desktop, which I use about once a millennium. Not on the app.

BIWI · 30/09/2025 17:58

Very possible @JJZ - and of course, it’s absolutely their prerogative not to reply!

I mostly use the app so I don’t see PMs there, but I get notifications of them via email. I think that’s probably optional though.

I have to go on the desktop and get my eyeballs fried by the bright blue to see if I have any notifications or messages

Strangely enough I got a PM this morning and it's really thrown me.
I've only had two in the past: one was a poster who was sending loads of inappropriate PMs and was banned. The other was an OP who seemed a bit un hinged and I regretted very much engaging in an exchange with her.

So although this message I've received today is a seemingly innocent " Hi" I 've been really stumped as to whether to reply or not.

Private messaging on MN is a world I'm not familiar with and I have no idea of the etiquette about replying and not replying.

BIWI · 01/10/2025 10:05

If it’s an unwanted or inappropriate/unpleasant PM then report to MNHQ.

Anything else - it’s entirely up to you whether to reply or not, although if it’s a poster you ‘know’ or recognise or who has been on the same thread as you, it’s probably good etiquette to reply.

@BIWI
I did an advanced search on the user name and only one post came up with this user name and it's on a thread I hadn't even seen.
I will probably just ignore it and not reply. I suppose it's the inner polite me that doesn't want to offend anyone that's made me worry about what to do..

BIWI · 01/10/2025 10:14

I’d report that.
