Disable ad blocker order

VenusStarr · 23/09/2025 08:56

I keep getting a 'disable your ad blocker' message filling the screen. Sometimes I can click disable but other times I can't.

I choose no ads. So does that mean I am no longer welcome to use while site? Seems a bit short sighted, but i guess it'll help me meet my goal to not be on my phone all the time!

Anyone else getting this?

The irony of posting and immediately getting this! 🙃

No, you can't use the site with an ad blocker, it's how they make money.
But I'm sure the ads never used to be this bad.
Now the flickering ad at the top of the screen triggers my migraines and the gigantic ad in the middle of the page is hard to scroll past.
@MNHQ obviously don't care, they're too busy counting their coffers and creating new features that nobody wants, whilst ignoring all the glitches that make the site too hard to use.

Well, the site needs to be paid for one way or another, so you can either go premium or put up with the ads. I still do the latter but agree they are annoying.

I’m using MN (and thus my screens) a lot less now, on the plus side of all this.

A lot of us decline to sign up for Premium. This is on security grounds as MNHQ do not have a very good record on the data protection front, unfortunately. It’s not about the fiver a month. It’s about giving MNHQ our banking and personal details and these being hacked, or potentially an intern acting in bad faith and sharing them.

But I do have ads, I just do not want the pop up ads that fill my screen. There's enough on my screen already. Just wondering why the change as this pestering has just started.

Just use DuckDuckGo as your MN browser.

HebeMumsnet · 24/09/2025 09:34

Hi there @VenusStarr . Thanks for getting in touch. We have had software designed to prevent the use of ad blockers for a few months now. You can read more about that here.

We weren't sure if you were saying above that you DO have an adblocker installed or not though. If not, it's worth knowing that we have found that occasionally users have other software installed that's triggering the same ad blocker message. Some antivirus or security software includes built-in ad blocking or privacy features that can affect all browsers.

If that might be the case, you could try opening your antivirus or security software and looking for settings labelled for example:
Web protection
Ad blocking
Tracker blocking
Privacy guard
Try turning those off temporarily to see if it resolves the issue. Common software with these features includes: Norton, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Sophos, Avast, etc.

Hope that helps.

@HebeMumsnet I and several others have complained about the flickering ads at the top of the screen.
I have vestibular migraines and they are a trigger for my symptoms.
Yes I can skip, or close, but another flickering ad just appears so no point.
Are they here to stay?

They don't fill up my screen, maybe it depends what device you are using. I do get the flickering ones at the top but they don't bother me, I can see that they would be a problem for eg migraine sufferers though.

BIossomtoes · 24/09/2025 13:26

That bloody ad in the top right hand corner of my screen is doing my head in. I completely accept the need for ads but that one is beyond intrusive. Please make it stop!

Just use DuckDuckGo as your MN browser.

I second this, it resolves the issues with it all

CherryogDog · 24/09/2025 14:05

I tried DuckDuckGo but it made the text huge and I couldn't find a way to reduce it.
