You always say that you like and welcome reports. But moving it up to the ‘meatball’ menu makes it less convenient/easy to access.

Can you not replace the silly ‘add post’ with ‘report’?

Whenthetimeisright · 21/09/2025 16:32

I totally agree.

I think the report function is really, really vital to keep the site functioning safely.

It was always a visible option. Now it is an option that you have to look for and which you need to know exists before you even look for it.

I am possibly doing MN a disservice but I feel that hiding the ability to report has been done deliberately to deter people from using this function.

There has been controversy very recently about the lack of monitoring on the site which directly led to the appalling abuse photos being allowed to be visible for an unacceptable length of time on the site.. And this resulted in pressure on MN to have paid staff monitoring site on a full time basis. So to go from this to making it more difficult for people to report inappropriate posts and content is at best inexplicable, and at worst a financially motivated decision

BIWI · 21/09/2025 16:37

Yes, I did wonder if it was a deliberate change - although that runs counter to MNHQ’s claims that they welcome reports.

Is this on the desktop? The app still has it in the dropdown.

Navigatinglife100 · 21/09/2025 16:49

I often report spam that pops up in the middle of the night. I tend to wonder if I need to bother as it is likely many others will do the same as they stand out a mile. But, when reporting is easy, one does it.

I'll not going hunting for the function now unless it's worth the investment in clicks.

BIWI · 21/09/2025 16:49

The desktop. They’ve moved it up to the three button (apparently also called meatballs) menu, top right-hand side.

OP posts:
BeHappySloth · 21/09/2025 16:53

I assume that it is a deliberate change. They say that they welcome reports but the evidence doesn't really back that up. They frequently ignore racist content wise disinformation with no real explanation being given to the reporter...generally just the standard line about people feeling free to "challenge on the thread". Now they've just made it harder to report.

They will no doubt be getting a much higher volume of reports since the site has seen an influx of far right posters, and they probably don't have the resources to deal with it.

justasking111 · 21/09/2025 16:59

Found it. Meatballs 🤣

Please put the report button back!
ChristmasFluff · 21/09/2025 17:35

Yeah, any organisation that truly welcomes reports has the 'report' button displayed very obviously. not hidden in the '3 dots'.

It's all about the clicks and the bots now.

HebeMumsnet · 22/09/2025 12:41

Afternoon @BIWI and others,

We are monitoring the number of reports coming in and so far we've seen no change in the frequency or quality of reports since the button moved but we'll continue to keep an eye on it.

We will be clearing up the actions more so that there is less clutter on posts but it will be iterative so we can measure the impact at each stage.

Peridot1 · 22/09/2025 13:24

Why on earth move it? I’ve just spotted two threads in Active that I tried to report but couldn’t find the Report button.

Sometimes (a lot of times) the changes made to the site make zero sense.

BIWI · 22/09/2025 13:28

Thank you @HebeMumsnet

However, to follow @Peridot1’s comment - I’ve seen just now on another thread someone asking how to report something because they couldn’t find the report button.

Can you also tell us why it has been moved? And why the ‘add post’ button still remains, which is much less useful than the report button.

I don't even know what the add post button does.

BeHappySloth · 22/09/2025 15:16

The "add post" button is completely pointless. It would be very easy for MNHQ to remove it and replace it with the "report" button if they actually wanted people to report.

MeatballMenu · 22/09/2025 16:25

Yes, it's really annoying - but at least I found a new user name!

ETA that the "add post" button implies that any comment you make will appear as a reply to the post that you have just read - probably why so many comments are made without actually reading any of the thread.

If you actually have to scroll down to the bottom then there is a greater chance of noticing that there are hundreds of replies already, or that OP has updated the thread (yes, I know that realistically this isn't going to be the case, but \i can dream!)

Quandri · 22/09/2025 16:27

While we are at it with non-intuitive menus - Can someone tell me how to hide a thread?

MeatballMenu · 22/09/2025 16:35

I took so long to edit that I ran out of time to correct my \i typo...

Go to the top of the thread, and under where it says the topic name, you’ll see ‘Flip’ and ‘Hide'

Thank you. I was looking at the post menu and in the meatballs!

MeatballMenu · 22/09/2025 17:14

@Quandri You can also hide entire topics - very useful. It's in your "settings" menu.

NapoleonsToe · 22/09/2025 17:28

I remember that when the add post button was originally added. No-one knew what it was for then. Nothings changed.

Plus what's the point of having it on every post? It actually encourages people not to read a whole thread before responding. I can't think of any other forum I'm on that had this button, it's pointless.

But why move it in the first place? Why make it more difficult to find?
