Salt path promotion - odd choice!?!

Does anyone else think it’s a weird choice for Mumsnet to promote the salt path?

An advert for it just popped up in the middle of one of my feeds, and really took me by surprise!

There have been so many chat threads about this book and the author and her relationship with the truth. I’m not sure why Mumsnet thinks that this would be a great book for us all to read!? Surely there are so many other more interesting and less “grifty” books…

That is weird. Was it from a particular retailer, eg Waterstones, Amazon?

the link went through to amazon

Hi there @DoorOpening . If you see an ad like this again and can take a screenshot we might be able to tell you a bit more but either way, this is very unlikely to be a book we've chosen to advertise. It might be that Amazon have bought 'space' and you'll be shown a range of books that they're choosing to promote. Or, more likely, it's an algorithm where ad spaces are automatically filled according to what the algorothm sees as your preferences. If you'd happened to look up newspaper articles or other pages on The Salt Path, that would be enough for it to decide you were interested.

So, yes, not something we have likely 'chosen' but unfortunately not something we probably have much control over either we're afraid. As we say though, if you can send us a screengrab, or better still a URL we might be able to tell you more with a greater degree of certainty.

I wondered that as well. I saw it a lot when the "scandal" broke and I thought it was odd. I was on the various Salt path threads so I wondered if that was why.
Not seen it for several weeks now.

This is the screenshot I took. I guess it must’ve been the Amazon-buys-space model!

Funnily enough, I’ve just screenshotted it with the intention of starting a WTF? thread. Here it is, @HebeMumsnet

Salt path promotion - odd choice!?!

Just saw this myself and was astounded. There is a thread about it that seems to have reached part eleventy million. Odd choice to promote given the recent news about the author's allegedly very loose relationship with the truth.

I assume that the algorithm just notes that TSP is being discussed a lot on Mn and doesn't actually see that it is in fact eleventy million enjoyably scathing posts dissecting its author's unusually distant relationship with reality.Grin
