Pop up video adverts

Is there anyway of turning off the pop up video adverts?

I do not want to re-open the debate about opting into advertising being mandatory and accept that the site needs to use advertising for revenue

However the video adds are popping up constantly at the top of the mobile site screen and the bottom right of the main site and the moving, flickering nature of the video itself and the way the ads constantly disappear and re-appear create almost a strobing effect.

It seems to be a relatively new thing but it is incredibly distracting and is really triggering my ADHD and causing overstimulation.

I know a lot of other sites have these but they either allow ad blocks or don't have the strobing effect.

These other sites also tend to be the type where you don't spend too long on them (short article based news sites), and unless it is a quick visit, I tend to try and avoid spending too much time on them. MN is different - espcially when replying or reading long threads.

As I said, I totally understand the need for ads, but could there be an accessibility option to only see static ads? Even static ads on a slow moving carousel (rather than flicking on and off) would be far less distracting and overstimulating.

I don't want to stop using MN as I've been here for years on and off but I might not have much choice if there is no way to opt out of videos as it is really causing issues for me 😢

As an example - the type of static ads in the first picture aren't too bad. There are a couple with changing text and the way the ads box disappears and then reappears can be distracting, but it is not as frequent.

However, the video ads like the one in the second picture are the ones that are really causing issues

I agree with this. I am partially sighted, can’t see out of the right side. My eyes constantly try to work out what is on that side so moving video is distracting. I’d agree opting in to static ads. From your advertisers pov I can’t actually work out what the video is advertising anyway.

Ifailed · 12/09/2025 07:06

I agree, they are annoying and I have no idea what is being advertised, which renders them pointless as well.

Wheech · 12/09/2025 07:17

Yes they are extremely irritating. Almost impossible to close on the mobile site too, as the X is so tiny I end up clicking through and getting an annoying extra tab I have to close.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 12/09/2025 07:23

Yes, really annoying and sometimes cause MN to freeze on me. I don't mind ads on the page, but not pop-ups.

dontcallmelen · 12/09/2025 08:33

Same here, especially annoying as you can’t click on the “X” to get rid of them the battery on my iPad is draining at an alarming rate not helped by the videos & the constant freezing/reloading of pages.

CasualDayHasGoneTooFar · 12/09/2025 08:35

And they trigger my migraines. Please stop it.

Kreepture · 12/09/2025 17:27

yep having the same issue, they're a visual sensory nightmare, and have been triggering migraines.

Like others i've taken to covering the side of my laptop screen.. i shouldn't have to do that to have a disability friendly experience on a website i've been using for 19 years.

Whereisthesun99 · 14/09/2025 09:08

I agree it’s the same with adverts they appear and cover the whole page and no way of closing you have to leave site and come back to get rid of it them

CherryogDog · 14/09/2025 09:34

Yes that moving ad at the top is migraine triggering and very distracting.
Also the huge ad that appears in the middle of any thread I'm reading, something about the "more products you have, the more you save", really hard to scroll by without clicking on it.

Maybe MN would get more people signing up if it were cheaper per month.

The old ‘do you want lots of people paying a small amount or hardly anyone paying a larger amount’ question. .

Much like the thread on here about “why is my house not selling”, there are reasons why people don’t pay what others, in this case MN, think is reasonable. Address those and bingo….

The reason I don't sign up isn't the cost - I could afford it - it's that the historical data leaks mean I'm wary of giving MN my bank details. If they could come round to my house once a month and collect the money in cash, I'd do it 😆

amusedbush · 14/09/2025 10:52

Another vote for this. I have disabled my adblock for MN and I can just about cope with the moving banners, but the videos popping in and out are a step too far.

Please get rid of them!

I hadn’t even thought of that tbh but it’s a very valid point.
I just cut back on my £2.99 here £3.99 there, a couple of £8.99s etc and before you know it youve spent a fortune.
