Mumsnet's making my browser hang

I thought it might be my machine (it's dying - new one on the way) but realised it ONLY hangs on Mumsnet. Browser tells me the tab's unresponsive, offers to reload it, and it's fine ... until it freezes again. Other sites don't cause the same, even if they're streaming video.

Chrome browser (up to date), Windows 10, caches cleared twice a day.

Just testing this to see if the problem's triggered by the quote function ...

Nope! Worked as expected. I'm all out of ideas.

I had same problem with Edge but Chrome is working fine

Hi there @GarlicPint. Trying another browser might be a good shout as @alongtimeagoandfaraway suggests. Otherwise, it would also be worth checking your settings and moving to 50 or 100 posts per page to view, rather than 'view all'. That often seems to make a difference with bigger threads. Let us know how you get on.

GarlicPint · 08/09/2025 04:20

Thank you, @HebeMumsnet. I have it set to 100 posts, and it's never been a problem until recently. I've now uninstalled my browser, deleted all its files and re-installed it. This is the only tab open on the box-fresh installation ... and it's just crashed again. Same 'unresponsive' message, only this time it crashed out before it could try reloading!

If you're not hearing this from many other users, I can see it may be something to do with my struggling PC. It's still notable that only Mumsnet causes it, though. I wouldn't expect MN to put more strain on the machine than video streaming, or even a retail site for that matter.

Just thought this might help (? no idea). Chrome with ONLY Mumsnet open.

It's not just you OP

My safari browser using mobile Mumsnet freezes and crashes on a regular basis. I have given up and just leave MN for the next few days and go elsewhere

I will admit it is partly my fault as I like to have view alll and not pages (can't stand having to click through a gazillion pages when reading a thread) but I feel like if view all is an option then it should be an option that works....

Update of a sort. MN hasn't crashed out for a few hours now. I can't see what difference there might be, but maybe your tech team has fixed something?

Have to set up the new PC tomorrow (argh) so won't be on the website!

The app keeps freezing up badly as well. It’s usually ok if I force close it and reopen but one day it was so bad I thought my whole phone had crashed. I couldn’t get out of the app to force close it at all and my power button on my phone wasn’t even working. It’s also making my phone ridiculously hot at times.

I’ve solved this completely recently by paying £29.99 for Mumsnet Premium. I think it must have been something to do with the adverts.

Zanzara · 09/09/2025 08:54

I had this on my iPad, kept having to do factory resets and even that stopped working in the end. It was definitely Mumsnet, it messed up my whole internet experience and it nearly drove me insane.

In the end I swapped to the app. I now hvae reduced functionality. but no more freezing.

I too am convinced it's all the adverts.

Mine did this too for the full day on Friday, I think. It's generally triggered after I hit the first large advert on the page (mobile browser)
