App is black

The background of the app is black and the text white. Is this a new thing? It’s very hard on tge eyes. I’m going to give up using it if this is a permanent change.

do you have, somehow, "dark mode" enabled @garlictwist?

eta;
To enable/disable dark mode in the Mumsnet app:
Open the Mumsnet app.
Go to Settings. This is usually accessed by tapping your profile icon and then selecting "Settings".
Navigate to Display.
Select/deselect "Dark view". This will switch the app's background to black/back

hhtddbkoygv · 31/07/2025 03:22

Have you inverted the colours in accessibility?

This is all I get when I hit ‘settings’. It just happened to me too and I’m miserable. The app is pretty shit as it is, this is just making it worse 😕

@garlictwistthat being said, I can change the app back to normal view but disabling dark mode on my iPhone’s settings, but I like dark mode in general on my phone, but have it enabled for certain apps where it’s more difficult to read. This app is one of them. Ira a faff to have to turn it on and off every time

LegoHouse274 · 31/07/2025 03:31

I am having the same issue and definitely didn't change anything myself.

waaaaaah · 31/07/2025 06:19

Same issue here. I’ve checked my iPhone settings and have my usual dark mode/focus settings - all other apps are as normal except MN. This was before a recent iOS update too. Just suddenly one day MN was black instead of white.

snemrose · 31/07/2025 06:40

Happening for me too - definitely haven’t changed anything. It’s very annoying

CagneyNYPD1 · 31/07/2025 07:44

This happened to me last night. No change of settings. Back to normal this morning. Strange.

BeckyAMumsnet · 31/07/2025 11:01

Hello @garlictwist there aren't any dark mode settings in the app at the moment (though we will add this at some point). For now, the app will match the settings on your device, and so if you have dark mode enabled, the Mumsnet app will match it.

If you're seeing dark mode at night only, this is likely caused by having a setting on your device that toggles between dark and light automatically depending on the time of day.

Here are instructions for iPhone/iPad.

Yes this is EXTREMELY ANNOYING!
I have dark mode enabled on my android phone, but I don't like to READ in dark mode.

The white text on dark background causes eye ache for me.
You urgently need to add an option to disable dark mode on the app only.

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/07/2025 12:05

@BeckyAMumsneti don't have my dark mode settings active and yet the app is still black.

Same here

CagneyNYPD1 · 02/08/2025 07:53

@BeckyAMumsnetno change to my settings so something strange was going on.

thatoldchestnut · 02/08/2025 08:10

I’ve had the same thing happen to me. The app automatically changed to dark mode last week and I can’t change it back in the settings on the app- only if I change my phone settings .
Previously to last week the phone was in dark mode, but the Mumsnet app still light. Mumsnet really doesn’t work well in dark mode, although I like dark mode generally on my phone.

Could we have an option to change from dark mode to light on the app only?

RainBow725 · 02/08/2025 08:15

I love it! 🤷🏻‍♀️People have been asking for a dark mode for ages. It would be better if users had a choice over it though.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 02/08/2025 08:23

My phone isn’t on dark mode but MN has gone black. I’m not necessarily averse to it but I didn’t change my settings

ThatWordDoesNotMeanWhatYouThinkItMeans · 02/08/2025 21:18

I have 'sunset to sunrise' dark mode phone setting (Android) - I have had this for years, but MN has only just started showing as white text on black background for the last few days. I quite like it, but I guess it's some sort of Android update.
If I change to light mode, MN reverts to normal.

Yea I have (had!) the same setting but I’ve just changed it 7-10 following the directions from Becky MN.

CoffeeandWalnuts · 02/08/2025 21:49

Mines the same, app is suddenly black background. Android and haven't changed anything. I've checked my phone settings and dark mode isn't enabled

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 02/08/2025 22:15

Very helpful for reading threads in the same room as my son when he sleeps. I think the light has woken him up in the past! But the choice of light or dark mode would be good
