Confusion when threads are moved: could MNHQ include an Announcement please?

POWNewcastleEastWallsend · 30/06/2025 11:56

I have no idea how often MNHQ moves threads from general boards like "Chat" to topic-specific boards or whether it causes issues elsewhere but it is causing problems when threads are moved to FWR without notice and neither the OP nor FWR regulars are aware of the move.

When MNHQ moves a thread because they think it fits better somewhere else, please could MNHQ post a brief announcement so everyone knows what is going on?

Looking at current threads in Chat there are loads that could have been posted on specialist Boards but they have been left to stand.

Is the reason for corralling all "Sex & Gender" topics into one Board to make moderation of those topics more manageable?

Whatever, an Announcement by MNHQ, preferably both at the top of the thread to advise everyone on the destination Board and in-thread to alert those already on the thread, would be fairer to everyone affected and would reduce misunderstandings and disruption.

Hi @POWNewcastleEastWallsend. Thanks for your feedback. This is a good point and something we do try to do as best practice, but it sounds like occasionally we're forgetting to do that. We'll pass your feedback on and endeavour to do this more. We don't tend to post at the top of threads but any MNHQ post is flagged at the top of the thread too so hopefully it will be seen. In certain circumstances, however, (eg if there were some real confusion going on) it's definitely something we could make an exception for.

To answer your question about Sex & Gender, it's less about moderation and more about the fact that lots of people were telling us they didn't want to read all the threads in Chat and AIBU all the time and sometimes the number of them was a bit overwhelming. Plus, we hope that in a dedicated space, the discussion is more informative and interesting. However, if a topic on this debate is very much in the public eye (eg it's in the news that day) we try to use our discretion and will sometimes leave threads like this on the main boards. Similarly, if they're representing a 'wider' debate somehow, we might do the same. We take into consideration the sort of discussion the OP was hoping to have too. So it's not black and white and we take each case on an individual basis but where we think a thread needs moving to a specialist topic we'll do so. You're always welcome to report threads to us if you think they need moving. Often they're only where they are because they haven't been flagged up to us, so it's always worth dropping us a line.

Thank you for taking this on board and for the explanation - that makes sense.

We don't tend to post at the top of threads but any MNHQ post is flagged at the top of the thread too so hopefully it will be seen.

I forgot about the automatic flagging at the top of the thread when MNHQ post in a thread!

Ah! Maybe the Mumsnet comment isn't as obvious as we hoped! But yes, it is there and actually it's a bit more useful now as you can click to read all of MNHQ's posts in a thread (in the same way you can an OP's posts) so if there are several from different mods you can see all our posts in one go now.

@HebeMumsnet One thing that I have noticed is that the message at the top of the thread will only take people to one MNHQ post and not to all of them on the thread. Is there a way to do this? Sometimes there are more posts from MNHQ and it is hard to find them.

Thanks

Don't worry HebeMumsnet, I have just seen that it does now say 'all'. I thought it did in the past, then one day I was looking for MNHQ comment recently on a thread and that didn't appear.

Sorry bout that.

HebeMumsnet · 30/06/2025 12:43

Hi @Helleofabore! Ah - that's not what's supposed to happen! So if you click on the blue 'See all MNHQ comments at the top of this thread do you only see my first post?

If so, could you tell us what device and browser you're using and we'll look into that.

HebeMumsnet · 30/06/2025 12:43

No worries @Helleofabore ! Glad it's working ok.

We cross posts.

I thought I was going nuts the other day when I had to scroll all the way through. Maybe it was on my phone at the time. but it is working now. Thank you.
