Reaction from "Anonymous user"

One of my posts has a "LOL" emoji reaction from someone called "Anonymous user". I'm not sure if they are genuinely laughing at my post or mocking me, but that doesn't really matter. What does concern me slightly is that it is apparently possible to react (and post?) anonymously. Or does this mean that this person literally did a name change to the words "Anonymous user"?

Everyone on here is anonymous.

Tillow4ever · 02/06/2025 10:07

Aren’t we all anonymous users though? Dies it really matter? As long as MNHQ can tell who’s doing what?

IfYouDontBelieveIt · 02/06/2025 10:10

Everyone is anonymous. Even if it showed a username, they could just change it.

Darragon · 02/06/2025 10:10

I've seen that, I think it's someone's actual username but not 100% sure. I got my first "being laughed at on a serious post" reaction today. Really shitty behaviour.

Hi...

When someone registers for Mumsnet for the first time, they're not automatically given a username. You only set your first username when you post for the first time.

If a user who hasn't posted reacts to a post, they don't have a username to display, so we display them as "Anonymous user".

We still know which account the reaction is from, and if there are any concerns, please do report it to us.

Hope that helps to clear it up!

I note that when I went to react "thumbs up" on this post, the LOL emoji was no longer available. Maybe MNHQ has taken a rapid executive decision.
