Can’t report thread with upsetting title

There is currently a thread in chat with an extremely upsetting title (Gaza related). I don’t get an option to report.

The report button is where it always is. I've hidden it so can't do it for you.

I wish they would keep the arguing in the board made for it though. Why spill out into chat.

LoopyLooooo · 25/05/2025 22:57

I do get an option (not sure why you don't) but why on earth would you want to report it?

Given what that poor woman is going through, it would seem rather crass to do so.

BadlydoneHelen · 25/05/2025 23:00

I'm not sure what you would be reporting either?

Stripeyanddotty · 25/05/2025 23:00

9 of her 10 children have been murdered. That is more than upsetting.

MidnightMeltdown · 25/05/2025 23:02

Why do you need to report it? Adults don’t need to be sheltered from the news. If you find it upsetting stay offline?

Some people may have lost children, do you actually think they should be banned from the internet? That's tosserish.

RotiCanai · 25/05/2025 23:13

Er, actually I don’t think I need to explain to you why I find a thread title triggering. I am not minimising what has happened or what anyone is going through (I am very much pro Gaza, if you are assuming I object because I am an Israeli sympathist? I am absolutely appalled by what it happening and the lack of sanctions on Israel). I don’t think I (and probably some others) need to come across it very unexpectedly with no warning. You can have a thread without saying something so explicit in the title. Why does it matter to YOU what I find upsetting and can or can’t cope with? But yeah, thanks for piling on when I’m already feeling like shit… I thought I’d be safe in site stuff asking a genuine question about something that has affected me rather than AIBU! Good to know I should just go off grid so I don’t have to worry my little brain about the state of the world.
Many thanks to @gamerchick I have no idea why it isn’t showing for me…

Mumsnet is one of the few websites that happily puts measures in place to protect its members from things they find triggering and don't want to see.

The 'hide thread' function is there for this reason.

sundaybloodysunday12 · 25/05/2025 23:36

I think it’s a bit precious to be so wound up about a thread title to be honest.

Just have a think about it for a minute.

Womblingmerrily · 25/05/2025 23:39

Hide the thread. Job done. No one is 'piling on' They're pointing out you can help yourself and suggest you do so.

I didn’t get the option to hide the thread (although I did get the option to watch it).

Also, even if I did have the option, I’d already have seen the very triggering title… my point is that the title should not be so triggering. I see titles ‘edited by MNHQ for trigger warning’ all the time. It gives you the option not to click in WITHOUT seeing whatever the trigger warning is about first. Which is why I figured it would be fine to ask them to do the same for this one.

I’m sorry but you are being precious here.

If the report option is missing and the hide thread option I'm not sure what to suggest.

If you're using the app, you could try using desktop instead?

NestaArcheron · 26/05/2025 00:53

Thread title doesn’t need changing - it’s a tragedy and it’s a factual title. You can’t hide from the atrocities of what is happening by hiding thread titles. It’s important that people know about it and the title does a good job of spreading awareness. It would be inappropriate to hide it and pretend it isn’t happening.

DontReplyIWillLie · 26/05/2025 01:40

Er, actually I don’t think I need to explain to you why I find a thread title triggering.

You do if you want people to help you report it.

ByZanyRubyOrca · 26/05/2025 01:58

Extremely upsetting things happen all the time in life. This is one of them upsetting things. Reporting or trying to remove threads just because you don’t like is very controlling behaviour.

Of course some people may have lost children, which is very sad, but surely they are hearing this numerous times on the news. We can't shelter everybody from everything. If people can't cope with this sort of thing then the internet is the last place they should be.

WeHaveTheRabbit · 26/05/2025 03:01

What do you mean you don’t have the option to report or hide the thread? Doesn’t everyone have those options?

Never2many · 26/05/2025 04:17

The word triggering is way overused. There was even someone complaining the other day complaining that a thread about vomiting children should have a trigger warning.

bad things happen in the world. What was said was factual and correct. If you’re upset by it then that’s sad but it’s on you to stay away from the internet not have everyone else have to be hidden.

mnhq will likely ant hopefully hide the thread in the morning.
