MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

• Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
• AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
• Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
• Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
• See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
• Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
• More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
• GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

• Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
• Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
• More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
• Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
• Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
• PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Sorry MN I hate the new app. It’s very counter intuitive to me and I wish we could have the old one back.

It's so awful.

• The newest posts first is the default.
• You cannot swipe from right to left to bookmark, quote, report etc.
• The original post remains regardless of order.
• You cannot flip the order of posts when looking at posts by one user. I paid a premium to use this. I'm really annoyed.
• The app refreshes once you leave it.
• You cannot copy text. Really?!

Is this going to be addressed? Otherwise I want a refund I'm really unhappy

i think I may leave Mumsnet as it’s not as easy to navigate as before.
why make life more difficult ?

You’re right about copying text. What a bizarre decision to stop that.

You can quote already quoted on the app which is an improvement by and agree about the voting element on the app. But you can only choose “thanks” as a reaction plus all what’s been said already and someone else pointed out you can’t copy text which seems mad. All round it’s less good IMO.

I can’t flip OP comments? Am I being silly? Agree with others that the flip with OP at the top is good in some ways, annoying in others, but would appreciate being able to filter OP posts and then flip them, otherwise longer threads I won’t bother with anymore!

Personally I’m struggling with it in quite a few ways but I’m new to mn and had only just got used to the old app

For the first time in forever, I’m typing this from the safari website version!
I’m now debating if that’s now the easiest option?
previously I would only keep it open to check notifications but read and post on the app because let’s face it , it was easier and nicer to read ! But now 🤷‍♀️

There seems to be an issue with bookmarks. They're a bit hit or miss. Sometimes I open a thread and the top post is the bookmarked one, as it should be. But sometimes it isn't. The bookmarked post is several posts up or down. That's really annoying.

multiple times! , and I thought we were getting the reactions but no it’s the old thanks! , so reactions don’t actually show on the app ( but do on the website!) and you are only going to be thanked by others who have the app because everyone else is now using reactions!

I wonder if @mnhqare going to come back to this thread.

I hate this new app, if I try to tag someone by inputting @ and then choosing their name from the list provided it does it twice and inserts brackets and the word "mentions". On the bright side it looks like I'll finally be cured of my daily addiction to mumsnet as I dislike it so much I'm going to cut back on coming on here!

They commented yesterday at 4.55pm so they have come back to it.

Hi one change that would be good is keeping newest first do you don’t have to flip each time.

I'm still trying to work out why it's making my eyes hurt, like others, and why it's so hard to read. I can't seem to pinpoint it.

What I see now compared to an old thread. Doesn't look that different does it, so why is it so hard to read, I keep blinking because it's unpleasant on my eyes.

I would happily have the old one back without the extra features tbh. And I’m a mn subscriber

I don’t know either but I agree. I also agree with the criticism of the wrong order being used, the bookmarking being more difficult and the new flipping being ahem, flipping annoying. I hadn’t realised how much I did that, and relied on the ability to do so.

It's better but I am annoyed. I can't seem to stop my browser from going to the app which means I can't see my notifications.

I dont like the white background I liked the blue it was less harsh

and theres a million quoted quotes before someone's post when they've quoted someone one who quoted someone else who quoted someone else. I liked the f at that disappeared before lol.

my phone updated it automatically so it wasn’t my choice!

You can set this in Settings/Talk.
What I really want is newest first for any thread I’m on or am watching (because I should have already read from the start down) , and oldest first for others so I can read down all of a thread I’ve not been on before.

On iOS (perhaps with my settings) it’s more readable and clear. I’m finding a lot of clutter is gone (though I can’t put a finger on what). The ‘flip’ is quite cumbersome with latest on top but after the OP. The original flip and filter+flip was awesome and should be left as is if possible. Emulating the website is not a win on this point.
