MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

I agree @lakecomomo I expected it to look like it did but with a few new features in line with the mobile site. Instead we got something horrible and hard to navigate. I’m completely baffled.

Totally agree. I am dumbfounded at how bad this is. Visually ugly and functionally many steps backward.

why on earth would swiping be eliminated? The old app was fine; this is a bafflingly amateurish backward step.

Yeah I want the old one back :(

So do I.

Tho I keep getting this as posting too quick - this is annoying

One more thing. Can the search functionality be totally overhauled so it’s actually worth using? Both mobile and desktop are completely useless and you get better results searching for the thread through Google!!

Looking for the thread where the DH was abandoned at the airport for being a total arse and even searching the thread title vertabrim was only bringing up results from 2005. Zero recent results and the actual thread nowhere to be found.

Same with usernames. Sometimes it brings up a bunch of old threads the user created and omits recent ones altogether.

Totally nonsensical!

I don’t think that’s an app-specific problem, it’s an existing anti spamming measure.

I don’t think that’s an app-specific problem, it’s an existing anti spamming measure.

But I’ve only had it think once before and on think last episode of a programme that wasn’t able to binge so all had to watch live and we were manic posting /replying

like happy valley but wasn’t that

i think at the time I said that telly threads shouldn’t have it on as many live post as watching

whatsappdoc · 17/03/2025 10:22

I like simple things. I only use one ‘thing’ on Talk and that’s the toggle/flip thread. WHY does it need a ‘sort’ menu? If it’s newest post first and you press the toggle then it stands to reason you want to see the oldest. And when you select a poster’s posts I don’t even get that option any more. So, selecting OP’s posts (and there could be dozens), I have to scroll through lots of screens to see the last thing they posted. Don’t like it!

Another thing, I can’t seem to change the colour of the user names in the threads. I can’t distinguish between the blues and greens, so mine looks like the OP’s. Have changed it in Settings and logged off but staying the same.

JaneJeffer · 17/03/2025 11:05

Edited-wrong thread because MN did something weird and I ended up here instead of where I was Hmm

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 17/03/2025 15:52

I’ve just posted on a thread and ended up back at the beginning of the thread afterwards. Somethings not working right…

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 17/03/2025 15:54

But after posting on this thread just now, I came back and was still at my post here. Very strange.

Tallisker · 17/03/2025 18:00

Why do the ads on some threads look like posts? I don’t read the posters name most of the time, just the conversation. Annoying.

And the flip thing is rubbish.

And the not having capital letter automatically after a full stop.

And the bookmarks are very vague, it’s not easy to see where you’ve bookmarked.

Tallisker · 17/03/2025 18:02

And why have you changed all the colours? Is that just a shake up, or is there a good reason for the change?

whathaveiforgotten · 17/03/2025 18:09

I can’t understand what the reasoning would have been for stopping people being able to copy and paste just a section of a post rather than having to quote the whole thing. Likewise, I can’t see what possible benefit there was in adding a step to the flip thread user journey. You select flip to change the order from oldest to newest or newest to oldest. They are the only two options so if you select it, you have already said you want it to be the ‘other’ one. So why the extra step now adding in a needless confirmation requirement before the flip happens?

drspouse · 17/03/2025 19:27

Will there be a way to skip to last post read like there is on the mobile browser?

whatsappdoc · 17/03/2025 19:31

‘That’s all for now!’ WHY? Please remove this banal comment along with ‘No comments yet, be the first to respond!’ Why exclamation marks? We’re not twelve 😩

Seconding the flip thing again, it’s getting really frustrating now every time I want to read new comments on a thread. And yes to the copying and pasting. Sometimes it’s literally just one or two lines on a massive post that you want to highlight and respond to.

@BeckyAMumsnet let’s see what it does for me - it looks like one reference as I’m typing this in

…seems ok. So not something that always happens

Queenanne20 · 17/03/2025 21:32

{mention:ErrolTheDragon}thanks@ErrolTheDragonthanks so much for replying as I keep asking this question and no one answers me. It looks like it's done it again when I've tagged you. I'm typing from an android phone and I've been on mumsnet for years and never had this problem before.

Queenanne20 · 17/03/2025 21:34

I breaks up my reply and keeps saying "mention". This is really frustrating, surely it can't just be happening to me?

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/03/2025 21:44

@Queenanne20 doesn’t do it for me

{mention:Blondeshavemorefun}{mention:Blondeshavemorefun}thanks@Blondeshavemorefunthanks for tagging admin for me as I don't think when I tag people it actually notifies them that I'm replying to them as it isn't in bold.
