Do we really want a site for parents to be littered with adverts for tacky see through lingerie and sex toys? Really?

Do you share a router with anyone else in your home? It also shows you ads based on their browsing history.

Despite the fact that a certain posters on MN think Irish people are terrorists and are allowed to say so by HQ I can assure you that nobody in this household has been searching for anything like this.

Did you mean to quote me? This thread has nothing to do with Ireland, Irish people or terrorism.

It’s nothing to do with being a prude. It’s that I assume some people scroll whilst young children are around and might not want to explain why the lady’s ‘dress’ is see through.

Maybe not be scrolling on your phone around your kids?

I don't care about ann summers adverts but I haven't seen any.

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:19

@StormingNorman I was answering your shared router question

You've totally baffled me.....where did the thing about Irish people suddenly come into the conversation 🤷

Can't you just explain that she's wearing underwear or a nighty? If they must be looking at your screen.
I've also had these ads even though I've never gone to the Ann Summers website so I don't see why I'd be targeted particularly. In any case, I'm one of the many on here who are actually not parents.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/02/2025 16:25

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 08:07

That's not true. I keep getting advertisements for balaclavas and camouflage which I have never searched for and will never buy.

Is there a difference between the ones on the side and the ones that appear in the centre of the screen? I do think the side ones are often personalised because they're websites I've visited.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/02/2025 16:26

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:03

@ginasevern I'm kind of tempted by this one

Omg. Why would a member of the public but this??

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:28

@Needmorelego why is it hard to understand?
Get called a terrorist, start getting ads for terrorist outfits!

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:29

@Gwenhwyfar those are on the app. I've asked MN about them ages ago but they won't go away no matter what I click.

Yeah, you generally will only get adverts related to what you look at online. 👀

I never get ads for sex or porn type stuff. I wonder why you are getting it if you never look at anything like this!

Needmorelego · 07/02/2025 16:30

I never said anything about terrorists.
What are you on about?
I said "Army or similar" thinking along the lines of finding a Cadet group for a teen or careers advice on joining the armed forces.
Nothing to do with terrorism? How on earth did you make that link?

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:32

@Needmorelego when did I address this problem to you? This thread is in site stuff. You're confusing me now.

BatchCookBabe · 07/02/2025 16:33

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/02/2025 07:07

My algorithm is The Guardian, BBC food and the book threads on Mumsnet. All shocking stuff, I admit.

If that is true, that this is what you look at online. then someone in your house is looking at something QUITE different. 😂

Needmorelego · 07/02/2025 16:36

@JaneJeffer sorry if I am confusing you.
The whole thing about ads is it's based on your internet algorithms.
Someone (you? I can't remember) said they were getting adverts for camouflage outfits and balaclavas which they would "never buy".
All I suggested was if someone who shares their internet had searched something like "How to join the Army" the algorithm picks that up and then suggests Army style clothing to buy.
That's all.

Yeah I am really confused as to why @JaneJeffer has started going on about people bashing Irish people. Where the F has that surfaced from?! Confused

I’m the only one who uses the laptop and I definitely haven’t been looking at anything like that. I’d be surprised if anyone else in the house is. I thought MN showed paid advertising? It’s only on here that I’m seeing them.

They just want you to be paranoid and to feel silly and prudish. I see them as well but it doesn’t really bother me as it’s a site for adults at the end of the day. I do think we are more and more accepting of images though, the shop fronts are not want I want my young daughter seeing for example.

Yes this problem has been happening for ages www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/5190593-awful-ad which was why I mentioned it again here as nobody has been searching for stuff like this and nothing MN suggests will get rid of them

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2025 16:46

@BatchCookBabe because the ads appeared after those comments were made which was a strange coincidence. Sorry if I'm confusing people.

Needmorelego · 07/02/2025 16:47

@JaneJeffer unfortunately I can't tell you what's going on because I don't really know how the whole algorithm thing actually works.
I get some strange adverts that seem unrelated to my life (currently got one for an uber expensive spa hotel....).
I just thought it was odd that you seemed to think you were being called a terrorist because you had an advert for balaclavas.

CrystalSingerFan · 07/02/2025 16:52

ObliviousCoalmine · 07/02/2025 07:10

How do you think we became parents in the first place 🧐

This^

TethersMiddle · 07/02/2025 16:54

Those who are insisting that you would only see these ads if you’ve searched for something really don’t understand how things work. Of course, if you search for things you will see things, but that is not the only reason by any means.

CrystalSingerFan · 07/02/2025 16:56

I (childfree BTW) mostly use Mumsnet on my laptop, with a Firefox browser. No ads. It's great. Highly recommended.

OTOH, when I'm obliged to use my Smartphone, I can't believe the torrent of ads.

PheasantPluckers · 07/02/2025 10:04

'I don't know, bit silly, isn't it? I bet she's freezing!'

No need to pearl clutch.

How about just not exposing people to adult content without their consent.

Happyinarcon · 07/02/2025 17:04

But unless you've opted out of ads then you've consented to them. Haven't you?
