My partner does nothing to help thread contains paedophilia photos. Reported 40 minutes ago but they’re still there.

Is an administrator awake to remove them please?

The police will track him down and he will be arrested. Sharing images of that nature is an offence. Particularly on a public forum.

An aggravating factor is the very public nature of the forum - so he could have ‘distributed’ the images to many people which carries a custodial sentence.

I hope he is busy packing a bag. Cell space is at a premium so he could be in a for a very very long drive too, in a cramped prison van before he is produced to the courts.
Whom will take a very dim view of the nature of this offence, and the obvious motivation to cause maximum distress.

The criminal posts could have come from anywhere in the world. Where our police have no power or influence at all.

Police regularly work with other police agencies around the world.

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 03/02/2025 09:48

Luckily for me I was asleep so didn't see anything. I agree with PPs that MN need to put tighter controls in place.
Thanks to @ANightwatcher and @NiteWotcha, and any other Night Watchers who had to deal with this, it can't have been easy. 💐💐

@IAmAWomanWorkingFromHome You seriously owe the Night Watchers a HUGE apology for that disgusting accusation!

I wasn’t trying to minimise it Mimmymoo, I understand how serious this is, but those who did wrong are the awful people who create and post this stuff. Mumsnet didn’t want this to happen.

Plus most of us have 24/7 access to the site free of charge, so if Mumsnet employ a fully staffed team of permanent mods I presume we either have to have an access charge for everyone or we have more ads encroaching on every thread?

oneofmeiscutebuttwothough · 03/02/2025 09:53

@Greygreencheckswithblue the company made £2m in profit last year. They can afford to employ mods

OneLemonGuide · 03/02/2025 10:26

The ability to post images is still there, and no @MNHQ comment in this thread explaining/apologising! Seriously!?! You should be ashamed MNHQ!

Edwina8320 · 03/02/2025 10:30

I clicked on the thread and saw the images. It was such a shock I immediately clicked back out of the thread. I then didn't want to reopen to thread to report the posts(not realising you couldnt do this at night). I didn't know about the night watch and spent ages looking through the website trying to find a way to make contact and report. In the end I just emailed the basic contact email.
I then went back into Talk a couple of times over the following 20 mins and couldn't believe the thread was still there.
I couldn't sleep as couldn't get the awful images out of my head. Poor children. I hope whoever is responsible will go to prison.
I agree that it was a systemic failure on mumsnets part and would be in favour on cancelling the function allowing you to upload photographs.

saraclara · 03/02/2025 10:48

@Quinlan sharing the link to the only person who could remove it (and only them) would NOT be considered an offence. The law might not be perfect, but it is not an ass.

You owe the Nightwatchers a huge apology. They really don't need erroneous critical posts like yours after what they went through.

The amount of money a company makes has no bearing on their responsibilities to minimise the risk of this happening.

People are acting like a volunteer-run organisation with no income shouldn't be held to the same standard.

Sorry not picking on you specifically but I've seen this 'argument' crop up on numerous threads.

Interpol is a thing, fortunately.

OMG logging out as quickly as I logged in! Thank heavens I saw this thread first.

But now I am wondering; is this thread genuine? Sorry op! I’m
as sure as I can be that you are posting in good faith but you never know do you?!

A suggestion of horrible content is probably as damaging to the site as actual horrible content ifyswim if some anti-Mumsnet person wanted to do damage I mean? But seeing as more than one poster has seen the nasty photos; it’s probably genuine. I am definitely not going to check or open any more threads until the all clear though!

Surely images like this shouldn’t get through the most basic of checks?

How will we know when it’s safe to log back in? Please Mumsnet HQ would you put a sticky notice up or something please?

Aargh! Nightmare for HQ! What a horrid start to the week for them!

Struggling to see the hyperbole here… It’s about as serious a breach as it gets.

I didn’t see the thread, thank goodness, and I’m sorry to all of you that did.

MN needs a serious reform, this should never have happened. A site this size and it’s not even moderated 24/7? It sounds like that thread was allowed to stand far longer than it should have been. Why aren’t photos screened?!

This site has become all about ad revenue and not the users. The change during the 15 years I’ve been here is massive.

There really is no excuse at all for what happened last night.

It also has the reputation of being hideously transphobic and Justine doesn't seem to care.

DidSomeoneTrump · 03/02/2025 11:54

She doesn't need to care.

Only a minority of terminally online morons consider mumsnet to be a transphobic site just because it allows women to talk about women's rights.

Tortiemiaw · 03/02/2025 12:04

So these images were first spotted at 11pm and still up at 4am? That is the most appalling part of it. Absolutely awful. Still, as long as the money is rolling in, this and the all the other behaviours that are allowed to stand will probably continue.

Not to mention the trauma that so many people who innocently went onto threads, possibly up with their babies and small children will now be dealing with, not to be mention the volunteer nightwatch (get out now!)
An apology? That's nowhere near enough

Flabbergasting

my remark was not general but specific to the poster to whom I responded

Tortiemiaw · 03/02/2025 12:09

*Not in any way blaming the poor nightwatch for not getting them down, I'm blaming the greedy a multi million pound company exploiting people as if they're some <tinkly laugh> coffee table set up with no money still, who cant open their purses to pay people properly and ensure safety - in so many ways

ANightwatcher · 03/02/2025 12:21

So these images were first spotted at 11pm and still up at 4am? That is the most appalling part of it

No @Tortiemiaw the first images were posted at 11pm. They were removed and the user banned. The poster then created multiple accounts between then and 4am and posted dozens of images over loads of threads. They were all removed as quickly as possible. They didn't sit for 5 hours

onwardsup4 · 03/02/2025 12:21

@DoloresODonovan hyperbole? This really is about as awful as it's gets and that post worrying about MN HQ having a bad morning was hardly that anyway!

HebeMumsnet · 03/02/2025 12:26

Afternoon, everyone.

Understandably we have a lot of threads in Site Stuff about what happened in the early hours of this morning. In order to update you all about next steps as quickly as possible, we're going to close this thread and others to new posts for now and will post any updates on this thread so we can keep all the answers to questions and info on what's happening together.

We'll be back with any updates as soon as we can.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 03/02/2025 12:27

Apologies if it's already been asked - but have MNHQ posted a proper response yet?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 03/02/2025 12:27

Cross posted - thanks!

Devon24 · 03/02/2025 08:36

Thanks to you protecting other users and the site, this could have been far worse. Thank you for everything you have done.

I can say categorically you will not face any issues legally - you have done all you can to prevent further harm.

If you have seen these images you may wish to consider counselling. Some people may find they end up with PTSD or insomnia from such exposure to distressing CSA images, and by processing it now and properly - please take it seriously. It can take a long to recover from something like this.

Thank you for doing your best 💐

I think you should stop helping MN in this way. They are a business and they are exploiting you.
