When will the app work like mobile /desktop ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2025 22:53

For ages you said for us to use the app to all swap over - rather then desktop /mobile

so I swapped to the app - got used to it - took quite a few months

But

Still SO MANY things we can't do the app that you can elsewhere 🥲🥲🥲

You keep promising the app will be updated and we will get the same on both

Yes the app is quicker and I find mobile now a hassle so rarely use it and tbh only time is when I get a private message as only way can read them / as it is a lot slower

So lovely @mnhq when will we be able to do these things on the app

edit a post

quote a quote

like /give thanks etx to a post

message /reply to people via message

All things I would like to do but can't as use the app

Thank you

You can

The funnel shape thing on right of screen

I don't have that, I'm on an android phone, maybe that's why

I understand the purpose of the post is to get a response and some action from MNHQ, but if the app isn't meeting your needs why not delete it and use the mobile version?

This. It wouldn't occur to me to download an app to look at Mumsnet on my phone. The mobile browser is fine. What advantages would an app offer, otherwise why bother at all?

bruffin · 09/01/2025 08:56

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2025 23:42

Coz they made a big do to use the app and change over

Which many of us did

App is fast. I give it that

And the other site slow esp on long /600+ posts and reload /struggle etx

And im on several long threads that get to 1000 and start again so don't want slow/unable to load

I have never had a problem with the mobile site being slow to load.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2025 09:05

It's really slow v the app

I was very reluctant to move to app but as long threads kept reloading /was slow I decided to move over as m. Kept saying it was better

This was a while back

So all the things mobile has - it's weird and annoying the app doesn't have as been months maybe even a year or two since I swapped

I've had to switch to the app as the mobile version was barely working for me-on safari or chrome. It just froze, especially for longer posts.

It would be really useful if the OP's whole post could be a different colour so it was easier to see their response, rather than just their name!

I was only vaguely aware that there was an app, and haven't noticed any encouragement to use it instead of the mobile site.

I started using the android app when very long threads were very slow to scroll and regularly just stopped responding. It was extremely frustrating to have scrolled 500+ posts into a thread to have it lock up. You then had to either start again from the top (with the same slow scrolling) or just give up and not bother. Bookmarking every minute or so helped, but I didn't always remember. This was happening every day to me and making the mobile site unusable. The app fixed that issue and meant I was able to read/be on long threads again. I would have stopped using Mumsnet without it. I don't know if I'd still have the same problem on the mobile site as this was a while ago.

@Blondeshavemorefun

No-I'm on the app on an Apple.

The usernames are coloured but it would be much more helpful if the whole post was.

Gerwurtztraminer · 09/01/2025 14:15

Interesting, I just uninstalled the app on my Samsung this morning as so fed up with not just being able to see OP posts in a long thread. I use laptop at home and find the app so irritating so will just use mobile when out and about.

And it explains why so many people end up only answering the first OP post ignoring later posts which add more information or even change the whole approach Op was taking. People get told off for ignoring the updates but I can see if they are on the app how that happens.

Hope the new version fixes all these problems and makes Apple/Android capability the same.

Bjorkdidit · 09/01/2025 14:27

I never find that threads take that long to load and if I go back to a thread later it seems to pick up where I left off quickly enough.

That's on a laptop with admittedly fast broadband but also on my cheapy Android phone with fairly crappy 3 based mobile broadband.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feedback on the current app. As some of you have already mentioned, we’re in the process of rebuilding our mobile apps and are aiming to release them fully in the next couple of months. The experience on iOS and Android will be almost identical in the new app, and it will include many of the features you’ve requested in this thread.

As @VegTrug mentioned, we’re currently testing a beta version of the app to ensure it works technically and to gather feedback ahead of the launch.

@Phase2, you can definitely still sign up to use the beta app! If you’re on an iOS device, you can download the beta by visiting this link. You’ll need to download an app called TestFlight to access it, but there are full instructions when you visit the link.

If you’re on an Android device, please send us an email with the subject “Join the New App Beta” and include the Gmail address associated with your Google Play account. We need this email to give you access. Please send your email to [email protected]. Thank you all for your patience!

The new app looks better but you still can’t see PMs unless I’m not looking in the right place. Is this never going to be a feature of the app?

It makes sense to make all the changes in one go. And incorporating PMs should be fairly simple I would have thought. I’m not an expert though.

Enjoying the new app otherwise.

TriceratopsRocks · 10/01/2025 19:10

I now have the new app too. Yippee!! My first thought is that I really do like having most of the same functionality as the website.

If there is one thing I think is worse than the current android app, it's that when scrolling down Active, Watching or a particular board etc, the current purple background is much easier on the eye than the white background of the new beta app. Of course the threads have a white background on both apps, but I use dark mode now on almost everything as I find white very harsh to look at. The old purple was much easier on the eye, but I realise this is being very picky!! On the whole, I am really pleased that Mumsnet is working on getting the app functionality to match the website, and that's the main thing. But the option of a dark mode or other non white background would really help in the evening when I might be reading in a dim light. Thank you!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2025 20:38

I’m loving the new app 💖

Ive been beta testing the new app for about 2 months ish and to be honest I dislike it and am now using the old app again until they release further updates. It's really clunky and crashes a LOT. Very slow too but I'd assume that all these little issues will be sorted before the final release.
