Has the dreaded Reply been reinstated?

DappledThings · 02/10/2024 08:16

About 2 years ago I started asking if the erroneously named Reply button could be removed or renamed as loads of people were using it, thinking it actually created a reply rather than just a new post and we had loads of incomprehensible threads.

It was all finally fixed months ago (thank you!) but the last couple of weeks there has been a resurgence of hundreds of posts added to threads that appear to be replying to another poster but are just a new post.

Has something changed again that is confusing people?

i haven’t been aware of this even once

I've seen it - the reply button is still on the app. It just adds a post rather than a reply

Yesterday there was a resurgence of its use judging by some of the disjointed threads

It's always been called 'reply' on the app, the confusion only arose when the quote functionality was added.

Something must have changed on the app again. The whole annoying issue has massively increased again recently.

There are still people who Quote the entire OP as well, even when they are literally the first poster after the OP.

I know that's irrelevant but I swear that's increasing too... along with people who do not read the OP.

Maybe more new users are choosing the app rather than browser version?

Can we just check if it's IOS or android you're using? Were you previously using the mobile site before switching over to the app?

Nothing's changed for me. I'm wondering if something has changed for others as I'm suddenly seeing a load more orphaned posts that appear to be replying to other posts but aren't. That used to happen when the Reply button was so prominent but it got fixed.

I use iOS.
The reply button is there as it always has been - nothing has changed except I suppose that because people can see quoted posts nowadays newcomers get confused and think they're replying to whatever post they're reading or the last one rather than replying to the thread in general.
Screenshot is tablet, it's the same on mobile app.

So Reply is still there? What a pain. I don't see Reply anymore as I only use the mobile site.

Maybe more users are on the app now so more people are now being directed again to the Reply button or, to give it its full name, the Reply-button-which-doesn't-actually-create-a-reply-and-is-a-major-design-flaw

OP posts:

It does reply. It's on the bottom bar, the context is the whole thread not a specific post. The quote function works in the context of a specific post.

Imo it's not a 'major design flaw' (I write software with vastly more complicated functionality) but renaming it to 'add post' would remove the ambiguity.

It's not a reply, it's a new post. That's the flaw with it. People understandably think Reply will create a reply to that post not the whole thread. And don't notice that it hasn't.

There were multiple long running threads on how irritating this is months ago. In various places it was removed or moved so people stopped using and tje cast majority of threads starting making sense again.

Over the last couple of weeks there's been a resurgence.

@DappledThings It's not a reply, it's a new post.
But the new posts often (usually?) are replies, just not ones which auto quote.

But with no context. They give no indication which post is being replied to so become chunks of conversation that make no sense because they are referring to another bit of conversation but nobody else knows what bit

The old thread I linked explained why many users were exasperated with this.

Mind you I haven't noticed it today so maybe it was a blip recently.

Yeah, before quote existed everyone knew to c&p'd what you were replying to.
As you still have to if you don't want to quote a whole post.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2024 17:25

Anyway I agree it should be renamed.

Absolutely. I think we're in agreement!
