Why is there no separate forum in Education for private schools...

...yet you can find room for a separate forum for Disney trips.

What is the reason for refusing a separate section for private school discussions?

There's a forum called 'Boarding School' in Education.

AutumnCrow · 02/09/2024 21:16

I agree with you, OP. I think the majority of children at fee-paying schools are day pupils not boarders? (Happy to be corrected.)

It would perhaps be 'tidier' and save a lot of the non-deliberate and deliberate needling on other boards that doesn't seem to be 'in the spirit' of making parents' lives easier.

Sethera · 02/09/2024 22:11

Maybe MNHQ could change it to 'Boarding and fee-paying schools' because while a majority of private pupils might not be boarders, a majority of boarders will be private pupils, so there is less likely to be a clash of opinions and more likely to be relevant overlap.

GoingRoundInOvals · 02/09/2024 22:13

I asked MNHQ to create a forum for private schools, as opposed to just boarding school and they said no demand and to use the education topic. Annoying as there are some specific questions I had that didn't fit in that forum

noblegiraffe · 02/09/2024 22:18

Oh god yes the secondary forum is just full of 'I just can't decide between Blethersdale and Bumfluff' which the vast majority of secondary parents have never heard of, and other threads just got lost.

TeenToTwenties · 03/09/2024 07:54

I would be against the idea. Yes at certain times of year there are threads about choosing private schools, but you can ignore them.
I think there are more commonalities than difference - settling in, queries re setting or marks or reports, gcse options, exams etc.
I think both sets of parents would lose out if there was a separate private school board.

TeenToTwenties · 03/09/2024 07:55

Though right now you could make a VAT on fees board!!

HighRopes · 03/09/2024 08:02

I think it’s a good idea because at some points of the year the London 11+ threads (which are mainly private, with some grammars) do dominate the secondary board.

But (as you see with the Boarding topic) it won’t stop posters coming on to threads to make political/ethical points about private schools. So I don’t think it would help much - the people who disagree with private schools don’t care where the thread is posted, they see it in active and leap in.

Haroldwilson · 03/09/2024 08:03

I think that's fine but it would need 20% more adverts

I think a broad independent schools thread would be good while still keeping the boarding school thread. Sometimes different issues occur with boarding. Also there are state boarding schools as well as independent. One thread for independent schools of all types, one for boarding school issues would be good.

Morning, everyone. We're always happy to give thought to new Talk topics if there's enough call for them and we can see that they would be well used.

Please do jot down your thoughts about a private schools board here and we'll keep reading.

Mover2024 · 05/09/2024 23:08

I think it would be great to have a private school board. There are masses of threads on private schools and it makes sense to have one place to be able to go and read about it and to know where to look rather than having to google "private school threads Mumsnet" hoping you'll be taken to the right thread.

anonhop · 05/09/2024 23:26

Yes I definitely think it would be good. Currently whenever anyone posts about private schools & related issues, it seems to turn into an argument about their existence.
Would help parents (& by extension their kids) to just be able to discuss in peace.

CreateUserNames · 05/09/2024 23:34

It makes sense to have a private board.

MrsApplepants · 05/09/2024 23:44

I would like one, helpful to see threads that only relate to private schools

DressDilemma · 05/09/2024 23:58

Totally support this idea.

GoingRoundInOvals · 06/09/2024 06:56

Yes please, would be great to have everything in one place
