Deletion message completely absurd - potential child abuse

ThreeWheelsGood · 22/08/2024 08:31

There was a post in AIBU about a father co sleeping with his 3 year old while masturbating / watching porn. Lots of helpful but shocked replies spelling out to the OP that this was very much not OK.

The deletion message by MNHQ reads

"Hi all,
We are removing this thread as it has become a nest of trollhunting and impossible to moderate. Once again trollhunters are preventing MNers from receiving valuable advice."

This is massively misunderstanding the whole post and replies! Many responses were reporting the thread to ask MNHQ to take action. I read all the posts before deletion and didn't see any trollhunting. So disappointed by this deletion message MNHQ .

Yeah, ridiculous tbh.

Fanalang · 22/08/2024 09:19

Sometimes, the way posts are deleted are insane. I was commenting on a thread, didn’t use bad language, didn’t insult anyone, wasn’t inflammatory and was very polite. Because the op took umbridge due to being disagreed with many of my posts were seemingly complained about and deleted. There were many other comments from other posters which were also deleted yet there was literally nothing wrong in what they said 🤷🏼‍♀️. I honestly couldn’t see how I’d broken the rules. The whole thread was then removed after everyone disagreed with the op.

MN seem more concerned with troll hunting than perverts using this site to get their kicks.

Imtryingnottoworry · 22/08/2024 10:12

Yes I read quite a bit of that thread and didn't see troll hunting.
I know the OP posted that she wanted the thread removed herself.
It seems strange MN has given troll hunting as the reason for the removal.
I wonder if it's because some posters were expressing the hope MN could report the OP's IP address to the police because of their concern for the child has anything to do with their strange response?

Startingagainandagain · 22/08/2024 10:47

I commented on that thread and I don't think the issue was 'trolls'.

People commenting were worried about the child's welfare and suggesting Mumsnet should check if they could trace the origin of the post/the IP address and then report it to the police/social services.

Or there is always also the possibility of some pervert posting messages like this to get their kicks.

Either way that needs to be passed on to the police.

ThreeWheelsGood · 22/08/2024 14:45

I think what I take umbridge with is the huffy tone from @MNHQ - "Once again trollhunters are preventing MNers from receiving valuable advice."

"Once again"? Eh? NONE of the replies I saw were trollhunting. It's so dismissive of people who were actually offering the OP the much-needed "valuable advice", actually.

OP posts:
BobbyBiscuits · 22/08/2024 14:47

I remember that. It was awful what op experienced and people were trying to be helpful but obviously pretty blunt about the course of action. Sometimes stuff gets taken down for weird reasons.

JaneJeffer · 22/08/2024 15:41

Wow that's a terrible reason for removing a thread which sounds dodgy as fuck

But it is also clearly not the true reason as no one remembers any trollhunting. It's frustrating to be given that reason by MNHQ. It's disappointing and disrespectful for the people who reported it or commented to support the OP.

Didn't read the thread being discussed but think it's good mnhq are trying to dissuade trolls. It's true trolling or goading posters is bad news for everyone. don't know whether mnhq got it right or wrong but at least they tried 👍💪

AnywhereAnyoneAnyTime · 22/08/2024 16:42

I didn’t read the thread in question - only saw the title.

I would be surprised however if there wasn’t any troll hunting on the thread though.

That being said, the snippy tone of the post seems out of order, and the way in which MN HQ essentially are giving trolls free rein on this site where voicing suspicion is seen to be more problematic than actually making up disgraceful threads for kicks. disclaimer> I’m not talking about the thread in question, I haven’t seen it so have no idea, but we all know that it does happen.

I imagine that it’s possible that the OP of that thread may be a longstanding poster which could be why MN HQ have deleted for troll hunting, although that doesn’t mean that a longstanding poster can’t be a troll obv.

In terms of contacting the police, with so many people using VPN’s now, and with people using usernames as opposed to their actual identifiable information, it really is highly unlikely that the police would be able to do anything.

JaneJeffer · 22/08/2024 16:43

it's good mnhq are trying to dissuade trolls
But that's not what their post says: "it has become a nest of trollhunting" and @ThreeWheelsGood who was on the thread said there wasn't any troll hunting in any case!

wavingfuriously · 22/08/2024 16:53

Well maybe mnhq knew something other posters didn't? 🤔 it can be obvious to hq if a poster has multiple accounts for example..
Sensible to take what people say on here with a pinch of salt.. and don't get too emotionally invested ..atb

Usually in deletion message, MNHQ would then say "previously banned poster" or "taking a look behind the scenes", I've seen those enough times.

This deletion message is nonsense and has left the many people who responded unsure of whether the OP and child are ok.

Stunned mnhq haven't commented on this thread 😔💔

BeckyAMumsnet · 24/08/2024 16:42

Hello @ThreeWheelsGood apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this. We've reviewed the thread and there was a significant amount of troll hunting - along the lines of 'this can't be real', 'if this is real', etc. Some posters were also trying to link the OP to a previous thread and stating this as a fact when there was no connection between the two posters.

The reason we may sound 'huffy' (and that isn't the intention) is a reflection on how exasperating it is when posters are repeatedly accused of being trolls. It drives genuine people away, and, if a poster is a troll, it's just giving them the drama they crave.
