Can we have access to ‘reader’ on the Mumsnet website

On most websites there is now the option to view it using ‘reader’. it generally changes the font and background colours of the website to make it easier to read for people like me who have dyslexia.

Mumsnet is the only website I use that does not have this option, and I use quite a lot in my personal life/work.

Is this something Mumsnet would consider doing? It would make the site far more accessible for lots of people.

Bumping for you @MiriamMay . Have you tried any browser extensions that might offer this feature?

MiriamMay · 13/08/2024 16:19

Thank you, Tribpot. I do have one browser extension that works for other sites but not for Mumsnet unfortunately. @mumsnet is there anything you can do?

Hi OP,

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
We're just looking into this and will get back to you shortly.

Thank you, @LilyMumsnet. I appreciate it.

Sadly I doubt they’ll do it, as it won’t show their shitty ads then :D

@LilyMumsnet @mumsnet

Have you had chance to look at this yet?

@LilyMumsnet @mumsnet

Please can you get back to me on this. I have been waiting for a proper response since the beginning of August.

@LilyMumsnet

I’m still waiting for the response you said you would give me.

If it can’t be done then that is fair enough, but not replying to this when you said you would is beginning to look very much like you’re not particularly interested in making the site more accessible for people with disabilities.

I've reported your last post @MiriamMay just to draw MN's attention to the thread.

KellyMumsnet · 22/09/2024 22:07

Hi there @MiriamMay . We have had a long look at this here. Readers are really more for articles to present them without the distractions of the rest of the site - but it’s not really possible for us to do that with a thread unfortunately because it isn’t just a continuous “article”.

We do hear what you're saying about the colour and font issues, though. You can try changing the OP colours for a different background but we're not sure exactly how accessible these colours are and if it would make a difference for you. Perhaps give it a try and let us know. We'd definitely be happy to think about new colours as a feature but we’re abiding by WCAG 2.2 guidelines on our main colours right now so we wouldn't want to step outside that and make it worse in other areas.

Can we ask if there are any specific areas of the site you think we could make changes on and what would help? And if there are others with similar difficulties reading the content, please do pipe up and let us know as that will help us see where the need is most urgent.

I also find the font size islightly too small.
