Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Singersong · 18/07/2024 06:45

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

We are a Christian country though. We have a state religion, the Church of England, the monarch is head. Only about 25% of countries in the world have a state religion and we unfortunately are one of them hence the indoctrination in schools and other areas of life where Christianity should have no business.

"We" do not have a "State religion". The Church of England is not the Church of the "UK".

We are a Christian country, no matter how many follow that Religion. Our Monarch is the head of the Church of England and by law that makes the UK a Christian country.

"Church of England"

Clue is in the name ffs

Really? Thanks for the correction. Some progress at least.

Yes, it was abolished when Scotland brought it's Hate Crime legislation in-line with that of England earlier this year.

The UK now has two established churches (the other two having been disestablished more than a century ago.) Both are Christian. The Church of England is more entwined with the state, with the monarch at its head (rather than simply being a member as he is with the Church of Scotland) and Anglican bishops in the Lords; conversely the CoS is entirely self-governing without reference to Parliament.

But given that both the established churches are Christian, it is hard to argue that Christianity isn't the religion of the state.

There is no longer any such offence in Scotland.

Nor in England and Wales, since 2008.

anyone believing in an invisible man who lives in the sky and controls all is a bit delusion tbh no matter which religion

Are you always this intolerant?

CurlewKate · 19/07/2024 13:50

@ruethewhirl "Are you always this intolerant?"

Intolerance is trying to stop people believing in what they believe. Or trying to prevent them having civil/human rights because of what they believe.

It is not intolerant to say that you think someone's beliefs are nonsense.

This isn't intolerance. 🫣

It might not be intolerance but it definitely is ridicule and rather patronising and bigoted.
Would you openly say the above to a Muslim or a Jew?

I firmly believe that all religions are made up. While I don't go about actively telling people this, I will give an honest opinion if asked. I respect that some others may believe in a god figure and holy books and want to practice their religion, however they also have to respect that I (and others) either don't do any of that or actually follow a different religion entirely. I also appreciate that many religious people have been indoctrinated, some without realising it.

It’s fine to disagree- it’s the condescending and mocking language that is objectionable.
As to “indoctrination” - this implies an inability to consider an alternative perspective. I think many atheists are “indoctrinated “ in that they won’t/ can’t consider or respect alternative viewpoints but are very black and white in their thinking.

intolerance

noun

unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behaviour that differ from one's own.

Yes it is

There is a lack of open mindedness and acceptance on this thread.

I'm not religious, however I don't mock those who are as long as they don't evangelise. It is called respect.

You beat me to it but I was about to say the same. Of course ridiculing someone's beliefs by talking about an 'invisible man in the sky' is intolerant.

I suspect they would if they're this disrespectful of beliefs they don't personally happen to agree with.

Then it's also intolerant not to let someone express how they truly feel about made up religion. 🫣

I don't mock either but if asked for a view I'll give it.

I completely accept your atheism. I would never mock it . It’s the mockery that is the problem. You are entitled to say you don’t believe in religion. It is intolerant to mock and ridicule those who do

People are expressing how they feel, and unless I've missed something no posts have been deleted on here. No one's stopping people expressing themselves.

However, you clearly aren't capable of stating your personal POV on this objectively without inserting a dig. That's not exactly tolerant either.

Show me where I said people weren't allowed to express their views. Without paraphrasing or extrapolation. Oh no, that's right, you can't.
