Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Singersong · 18/07/2024 06:45

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

Why do you think you have special status?

Useruserdoubleuser · 18/07/2024 06:47

It is rude to say these things to someone’s face. Very important to allow free speech to ridicule all religions though.
I think all religions are delusional but would never say this to anyone religious in those terms.

Who said anything about special status? Google the definition of hate speech.

There's a difference between free speech, which I am an advocate for, and what is allowed on here.

Well
Personally. I think people who believe in any religion are delusional! Is that better

foothandmouth · 18/07/2024 06:50

Also to add. You are absolutely free to believe anything you want. As ami I

MiddleParking · 18/07/2024 06:51

I don't see this about any other religion.

You can’t be looking very hard. Also, it’s completely okay for people to go beyond atheism to criticism.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 06:52

If you see examples of hate speech, report them and they will be deleted.

Why do you think you have special status?

She doesn't. She is absolutely correct that nobody on here would ever call a Muslim or a Sikh or a Jew delusional or stupid or any of the other things that are frequently said about Christians. "Special status" implies that everyone is currently recieving equal treatment and OP wants something different. That's not the case. She is asking for the same level of courtesy that is afforded to people of other religions who post on MN.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 06:55

If members of other religions posted on here expecting special consideration and privileges in the society I am a manner of, I would be quick to challenge them too.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 18/07/2024 06:57

God is big enough and holy enough not to be harmed by the words of unbelievers.

Those who live the way that jesus taught really don't need the world's approval.
Jesus said "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."

But calling someone delusional isn't persecution. Has anyone ever refused to give you a job or rent you a home or allow you access to goods and services because of your beliefs? Of course not.

In my experience people only start being rude about any religionif people are inappropriately proselytising in a context where people just want to be getting on with life. I don't see as much disparaging of other religions solely because there's not nearly so much obnoxious unsolicited preaching about other religions.

Perfectly put

I’ve noticed this over the years. You can make a bingo card:
Deluded. (On this thread, delusional.)
Imaginary friend.
Indoctrinated.
Fairy tales.

SidekickSylvia · 18/07/2024 07:00

I agree, op. For a Christian country it's surprising that all religions are respected, other than Christianity by the general population.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2024 07:00

If members of those religions posted claiming that their religion was the absolute truth and asking for special privileges in society then I would be happy and willing to challenge them, but so far they haven't. Christians frequently do.

Well said. You cant say it's ok for someone to ridicule one religion only and not others. If you wouldnt ridicule Islam (which I agree, you shouldn't) then why is Christianity ok to ridicule?

WhitegreeNcandle · 18/07/2024 07:01

I’m not offended to be called delusional and think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I very much doubt the same comments would be made regarding Islam or Judaism though.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/07/2024 07:01

I think Christanity will always get more scrutiny than other religions because it is given such a privileged place in our society. It is the established religion and forced on children in all of our state schools etc. People inevitably push back on that more than they push back on religions that don't have the power to touch their lives in the same way.

But surely this wouldn't offend a true Christian. You have a right to believe what you want. I have the right to not believe in it.

Agreed if I stood outside your church making you feel uncomfortable going in with huge signs saying "delusional". Then you might have a point.

OneTaupeMentor · 18/07/2024 07:02

It is a strange thing.
Imagine the uproar if a god of another denomination was called a ‘sky wizard’ or whatever.
I personally ignore it but my teenagers are embarrassed to say I am a Christian. They are atheists and that is fine but they shouldn’t be embarrassed to talk about home for fear of ridicule.

Osco · 18/07/2024 07:03

I agree. The keyboard warriors aren’t brave enough to attack Islam or Judaism. Christianity is an easy target probably because they’re not informed enough to be able to question other religions.

ZenNudist · 18/07/2024 07:03

I've noticed this but actually mumsnet is becoming more equal opportunities for bigotry about the major religious. Antisemitism has stepped up since the Israeli war on the people of Gaza.

Id like to see mumsnet action their supposed ban on hate speech (particularly against Christianity). I think there's just so much of it and so many people think it's fair game that it's hard to moderate.

At least there are posters willing to flag troll hunting or anti trans posts. I certainly just ignore all the hateful comments about Christianity. I don't try and argue with the sheer volume of nastiness encountered by Christian posters on MN.

I think the issue is Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world you can look it up, there are often killings of Christian's and attacks and we never hear about them. But a non violent anti Islam action (still completely wrong) is all over our media.

"Nigeria remains the deadliest place for Christians, with 4,118 Christians murdered for their faith there from October 2022 through September 2023,"

"This number was supported by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at the evangelical Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts, which published a statement in December 2016 stating that "between 2005 and 2015 there were 900,000 Christian martyrs worldwide – an average of 90,000 per year.""

"The Internationale Gesellschaft für Menschenrechte[347] – the International Society for Human Rights – in Frankfurt, Germany, is a non-governmental organization with 30,000 members from 38 countries who monitor human rights. In September 2009, then chairman Martin Lessenthin,[348] issued a report estimating that 80% of acts of religious persecution around the world were aimed at Christians at that time."

So these are Christian's directly killed for their faith.

Are you serious?! Islamophobia and antisemitism are completely out of control.

Being called delusional is far less offensive than being called a terrorist.
