Hello, everyone 🙂
We have a bit of news to share... We are very pleased to announce the launch of our new feature Puzzles.

Starting today, you’ll find a fresh puzzle every day to challenge and entertain you. Whether you’re a fan of sudoku, crosswords, or other brainteasers, there’ll be something for everyone.

To access them, visit the Puzzles section under the More menu in the navigation bar.

We’d love to hear your feedback on this new feature, too, so please do let us know what you think in the comments once you’ve given the puzzles a go.

Have a lovely day.

Thanks for this new feature. I tried a couple of the word puzzles and liked them. It would be good to have a cryptic crossword as well. I'm not personally keen on number puzzles but it's good that you have a mix for different tastes.

I wonder if we could have a 'games and puzzles' topic in Mumsnet to sit alongside this new feature?

Frostandfrogs · 16/07/2024 18:53

Thank you for this @NermanaMumsnet 😊

SoupDragon · 16/07/2024 18:55

I looked at the code word but shouldn't the numbers above the original letters given on the keyboard match the number of the squares they are filled in on the grid?

Blurrymornings · 16/07/2024 19:01

I tried guessword but gave up because you have to scroll down to the keyboard and then can’t see what you’re typing. If you press a wrong letter you don’t notice until you’ve scrolled back up then you have to scroll down again to correct it. Can it fit neatly on the screen with no need to scroll like wordle does?

AudreyHD · 16/07/2024 19:17

Came here to say the same, the scrolling to see the possible entries for the Wordle style game and the number fit was frustrating.

I'd like this too. Somewhere for the wordle, strands and connections, quordle etc threads to live

Are you referring to the little number that's top left on the given letters? If you are, that number refers to the place that letter has in the alphabet e.g. today's letters are F, T and W - which are numbers 6, 20 and 23 in the alphabet.

I have no idea why those numbers are there, tbh, and I think it's just adding confusion

Just been giving the new puzzles a go. And the crossword is impossible because you can't where you're typing for the top section of the cross word and so it's hard to see what words would fit

PatriciaHolm · 16/07/2024 20:25

None of its designed well for mobile at all.

That isn't why the numbers are there though - if you add another letter into the main grid it displays the number of the box it's in. Also, you can delete the number for the given letters in the alphabet grid but not remove them from the word grid.

Basically, it doesn't work and clearly hasn't been tested.

SoupDragon · 17/07/2024 08:18

Here is today's. You can add the given letters again with a different number. You can't click on the given letters in the puzzle grid to change them though.

Sorry @SoupDragon I really don't understand and I'm more confused! Which numbers are you talking about that you can delete, because i can't delete any of them.

The way this codeword starts is to add all the examples of the given letters - the ones you're adding are in the wrong place, so the numbers won't match up.

Apologies if I'm (still!) misunderstanding.

BIWI · 17/07/2024 09:45

Maybe I should just have a go and see if can understand what you're sayingi Blush

NermanaMumsnet · 17/07/2024 10:00

Thanks all for your suggestions on how we can improve Puzzles - we'll work on those as well as enhancing the mobile experience.

If you find any instructions at the top of each puzzle page unclear, we can look into making them more detailed, so please do let us know.

In the meantime, please keep playing and let us know if you have any further feedback.

OK - I've completed it now @SoupDragon . Basically, as far as I can see, you can put the letters in the wrong boxes - which is what your example was showing. But everything else works out fine.

Basically, it's poorly coded and clearly untested.

BIWI · 17/07/2024 11:30

Why though? It worked perfectly!

SoupDragon · 17/07/2024 13:14

You think having the wrong numbers for the given letters is working perfectly? You think being able to put these letters in as duplicates is working perfectly?

I don't.

BIWI · 17/07/2024 13:43

Sorry @SoupDragon but I really, really don't understand what you mean by 'having the wrong numbers for the given letters'. I'm sure I'm being dense, but I really can't see what you mean. And as I said, I did it this morning and it was all fine.

ETA: I suppose I wasn't trying to 'do it wrong' IYSIM.

Sethera · 17/07/2024 13:58

Code word working OK on desktop.

The numbers are just the 'code' so far as I can see, so randomly allocated to the letters.

I don't.

It worked perfectly when using my iPad mini, might not on a phone though.

I was able to add a letter to a word and all other letters with that number were filled in, as was the square on the letter grid underneath. I could delete a letter that I’d put in either on the Code word grid or on the letter grid.

I did use the hint button a few times to check if I had guessed correctly, cheating I know!

Gingerkittykat · 18/07/2024 04:48

Numberfit was really annoying because you have to do a lot of scrolling up and down to see the possibilities.

The fake wordle was also annoying for the same reason, you need puzzles that fit on the screen so they are user friendly.

NermanaMumsnet · 18/07/2024 09:41

Hi all,

We’ve been listening to feedback and have now moved Puzzles to the navigation bar, to make it easier to find.

We’ve attached a screenshot below.

Completely agree with the others comments on usability - love the puzzles but frustrating on desktop and impossible on mobile, needs to fit on a screen

unlikelychump · 12/08/2024 10:49

Usability on mobiles has just improved. I'm enjoying these, thanks for adding just in time for my holiday
