First, thanks to MN for the change whereby when I'm halfway through making a post, accidentally click away and when I go back, it's now still there. Hurrah!

Secondly, no one's thanking anyone. Why not just make it "like" because that's what it is.

Hi OP

The thanks button is being used consistently and it seems to be a popular feature. We're wondering if you're looking for the number of thanks on other poster's posts?

Only the poster who has been thanked will see the amount of thanks on their posts - so if you're scrolling through a thread and see the thanks button, you wouldn't see the amount of times it had been used (unless it was a post you had shared).

Thanks for replying.

Sorry, what I meant was that when people are "thanking" posts, I think they're actually "liking" them. The use of the word "thanks" just seems a bit odd. Might just be me though 🙂

This has been discussed several times over the years! MNHQ have always been clear that they think a 'like' button isn't appropriate, because a) it discourages discussion/debate and b) it risks creating a popularity contest.

The 'thanks' button was introduced recently so that we could thank (or like) someone's post privately. So they would still know that someone appreciated their post, but without the inevitable publicity of doing so.

I use the thank button quite a bit to acknowledge an intelligent or interesting post.
