Trending never changes

Trending seems to have become less and less useful over the last few years. The same threads stay up for days at a time often with little going on in them.

Is it maybe time to tweak whatever algorithm you use?

Or give us the option for what list should appear in that prime real estate box?

Agreed. They stay the same for days.

Hi there @RawBloomers . Thanks for getting in touch. We haven't changed anything in the trending box so we're thinking it must just be coincidence that a smaller number of threads than usual are attracting a larger amount of attention than usual.

We've no plans to change things currently but we're always interested to hear your views for the future, so thank you for sharing - we'll pass them on. And if anyone else has thoughts on what they do or don't think works well with the trending box, please do share them here.

I think my post is pretty clear that I‘m not talking about a one off incident.

Trending has been getting worse for years and has now got to the state where the same threads dominate for days at time most of the time. There will be a flurry of change and then it will be static for days again.

I agree. The trend topics have remained static for the last few days. Surely the same five threads can’t be the most popular threads 24/7.

Agree with this 100%

Mine seems to be ok for a bit, then I use the back button and I go to a version of Trending that is days old, including showing me as having new notifications, when actually they’re all already read.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2024 04:12

Yes, it's clearly not working.

A completely different set of threads will appear in Active on the web version, vs the app, too.

And often the top threads on the app, aren't in Trending at all, if you compare (no Trending on app, of course).

FinanceLPlates · 18/04/2024 04:27

I’ve never really understood why you have both Active and Trending, and what the difference is supposed to be. And yes, Trending doesn’t seem to move much so I don’t tend to use it.

(I always access mumsnet on my phone, using the mobile web version, not the app - so it might present differently for other users.)

I've noticed over the past week/fortnight that the Trending box that used to be dynamic in updating, just doesn't update or if it does, it's done over night so that when you log in again the following day, you get a new list of 'trending' threads at the front but it stays fairly static throughout the day.
I'm accessing the site on a Chrome book

This happens with me too. I get notifications and when I go in to the thread I'm being notified about, it's days old and I've already been in the thread checking it out.

Would need MNHQ to confirm but from other issues I’ve reported I’ve been given the impression active is based on people posting and trending is based more on how many views a thread receives.
