Sciolist · 27/03/2008 13:29

IE. I always use 'new messages' and take the option "Messages since I last checked for new messages".

mumofdjandbabies · 27/03/2008 13:31

mumofdjandbabies and Sciolist, you're both on our system as "Remain logged in", so it could be your browser causing the problem.

Are you closing the browser in between visits, and that's when it's logging you out? It may be that your browser is automatically clearing out your cache, and thus your cookie, which is how the site recognises you.

mumofdjandbabies · 27/03/2008 14:41

oh thanks for looking anyway

not sure what that all means

OK, when you log in to MN, it puts a cookie on your computer - a tiny file with an ID number, if you like. So when you come back, MN looks for that little file, and says "aha, that's mumtodjandbabies".

But sometimes your browser is set to clear out all those little files every time you close it - so when you come back, MN doesn't know who you are, and so you have to log in again.

If you are using Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and scrolldown to the Security options - look and see if the "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" box is ticked.

ah ok thanks will ask hubby if he can help me x cheers me dear!

"Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" box is not ticked.

Mumsnet recognizes me - I do not need a password for "Threads I'm on", but only for
"New Messages" / "Messages since I last checked for new messages" (when I load favourites).

spamm · 31/03/2008 13:13

Ohh - this has started to happen to me too, in the last couple of weeks.

I have checked my settings and it can store cookies - so what else do I need to check? I keep on checking the box "remain logged in unless I log out" option, when I log in. What else can I do?

Greyriverside · 31/03/2008 14:07

If you find your cookie folder you might see if you have more than one mumsnet cookie. Sometimes the system gets muddled and deleting both and logging on again might put it right.

C:\Documents and Settings\YourPCusername\Cookies
and it will be called something like
YourPCusername@mumsnet[1]

JaneMumsnet · 31/03/2008 17:00

When you go to "new messages" there is a Search type option - either messages in the last xxx minutes/hours etc, or since you last posted. Are the username and password boxes filled in?

polly123 · 01/04/2008 08:54

Just a thought, check the date and time on your computer. If that is wrong, it can affect cookies, I think.

Sciolist · 03/04/2008 13:12

There were two mumsnet cookies, one as above and the other was [email protected][1]. I deleted them both, logged out and in, but nothing changed. The PC time and date are correct.

Jane - the username is filled in but not the password.
