Why is the app so awful?

houseydncf · 28/02/2024 10:10

Currently can't attach photos to my posts, the function just won't work. Have closed and opened the app etc but no joy.

Why is the mn app so bad? It just doesn't function well and never has.

The search function is terrible and not intuitive at all. It rarely brings up posts relevant to what you've searched for.

Sometimes you click on threads and they just decide they won't open, for no reason. WiFi and 4g working perfectly, no reason for it.

The app is allowing me to attach photos? Perhaps reset the app and try again?

NoOrdinaryMorning · 28/02/2024 10:19

Also I've never once had the issue of threads not opening and I only use the app

houseydncf · 28/02/2024 16:51

Done all of that it's not working.

The thread opening thing has been an issue for years. Always had the same issue over multiple devices. I remember threads where hundreds of MNetters had the same ongoing issue

mine works fine on apple

CatamaranViper · 28/02/2024 17:31

I'm on android and I have all these issues

BonjourCrisette · 28/02/2024 17:33

The Android app is awful and has significantly less functionality than just opening MN in a browser. Would recommend this course of action until they fix it!

GrumpySock · 28/02/2024 17:34

Oh it def is awful. On iPhone you cannot attach several pictures. You need to restart every time you need to add one more.

C1N1C · 28/02/2024 17:35

Android too. I don't see things like polls... it gets mentioned halfway down a thread and I'm like, "This is a poll?!"

HappiestSleeping · 28/02/2024 17:39

I think it is just shoddy development. Looking at how the website changes (layout / thanks button etc.) I suspect that Mumsnet have no product management looking at what the user base actually want, and so the developers just do what they think we should have.

Judging by the amount of adverts, I doubt it is lack of revenue to be able to pay for decent development.

Then again, mumsnet has grown organically, so it can't really be compared to a proper company.

If anyone from mumsnet is looking, I have spent my whole professional life in product management and technology and would be very happy to help?

SlumberDearMaid · 28/02/2024 17:39

The last time I tried the app, I stopped using it, because it doesn’t take you to the last thread you’d read in the ‘threads I’m on’.

It just took me to the start of the thread, which was really annoying. Does it still do this?

I have an iPhone.

Good points, but I honestly strongly feel as if they’re not motivated to care.

They know we come here anyway. They have vast swathes of users across the world, continually putting up with the extremely basic functionality on the website (because the website provides better functionality than the app - and that’s saying something, since the website functionality is beyond basic).

We provide the content, which they then go on to have full control over.

The ads are targeted very, very locally - I’m on the other side of the world and get ads for my suburb, let alone city.

And then, Active Threads’ is literally littered with more advertising via the many, many ‘Promoted by Mumsnet’ threads (which I never open, but presumably lots of you do).

Why would MN change / go to the effort of improving things?

They don’t have to, and they know it.

Also a good point, and probably the right one, however there is only so long a user base puts up with crap service.

There is no patent for mumsnet, so it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that someone starts their own. With a better user experience, I suspect a good many people would move.

Mumsnet would care then.

milski · 28/02/2024 18:48

I have an android and can't ever see polls either. Really annoying!

Moier · 28/02/2024 18:57

Not sure.. l only have the app.. Samsung android.. everything working okay.
I'll add a picture ..

It's been done, and they were very threatened, bans were dished out just for mentioning the name.

Wouldn't be difficult to call it a different but similar name. I'm not surprised someone tried though 😂

houseydncf · 28/02/2024 19:37

It's so maddening!

OP posts:
Estellaa · 28/02/2024 19:37

The name was completely different, but I can't remember what it was now.

But, and new forum, made on just a free site, would have better features than mn.

shoppingshamed · 28/02/2024 19:37

Why does anyone use the app?

Estellaa · 28/02/2024 19:38

*any

Arbor · 28/02/2024 22:58

I use the app on an iPad. The most irritating things for me are the uselessness of the Search function, and if I touch an image in a post to enlarge it, the app crashes.

Hi OP

We're currently looking at improving our apps, but we don't have a timeframe for this at the moment.

That being said, you should be able to share images. We're keen to take a look at what's going on here.

Could you let us know if you're using the IOS or android app? If you could send a screen recording of your journey to [email protected], it would be a big help.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 18/01/2025 17:39

It is a really shit app. Primitive and outdated.

houseydncf · 19/01/2025 16:15

Yes it's still a shit app!!

It's not intuitive and really laggy. @LilyMumsnet
