Posters confused about the 'reply' button

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2024 17:03

This has just come up on another thread - quite a few posters are confused about the Reply button, thinking (quite reasonably) it is how to reply to the post they're on ie quote it. It can lead to confusing threads as the context of the reply is missing.

This is presumably something that's started to happen since the quote function was introduced, it wasn't an issue before because all you could do is add a post to the thread which is what reply does.

Maybe some renaming of buttons is needed to make it clearer?

I agree, it's really annoying. I use MN a lot and know perfectly well where the quote button is, but I'm still sometimes drawn to the obvious "Reply" button if I'm not concentrating l.

Hi folks - thanks for your thoughts. We're in the process of making a few changes to the navigation buttons based on your feedback. We're testing some things out to make sure it all works as it should. Hoping to have an update for you ASAP.

Me too! I’ve actually used it a few times 🤦‍♀️

Thanks Becky, that's good to see.

Can you please come on to this thread to update @BeckyAMumsnet when ready, as this is where most of the discussion is, including a few new observations added today. Thanks.

And me!

So I’ve taken to posting the same reply a second time (using Quote properly) then using the edit function to delete my original quote-less comment…

I was just going to say the same thing.

I have been spending more time reading longer threads this week and the amount of replies with no context is very annoying and disconcerting. Of course, the posters that do it have no idea, as they don't go back to look at responses or their own post once they have posted their non-reply so won't know they have failed to actually make a point.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 17/01/2024 22:43

Yes. I accidentally did this thinking it would quote it or make it clear it was in response to something.

HebeMumsnet · 22/01/2024 10:28

Thanks @RestingCatsArseFace . We've had a look at that thread. It looks like the OP has found the reply button ok now but thanks for letting us know.

Heather37231 · 22/01/2024 11:19

Hi @HebeMumsnet I don’t think that @RestingCatsArseFace posted that here so that the OP on that particular thread could get help- it was to show you yet another example where the Reply button is causing issues.

Please please please can we have an update as to what the developers are doing about this? We’ve heard nothing at all on this thread. On the other thread linked, @BeckyAMumsnet posted to say it was being looked at , but that was quite a while ago now.

Pretty please?

Hello!

We're working on the changes and they'll be released in the near future - we'll give more updates when we can. Flowers

Hopefully it will be soon, so many threads make no sense these days.

And yes that is what I meant, @Heather37231 thank you for noticing.

I now see there are 3 threads on this, on the first page...

Yes, but it was the QUOTE button that she needed - so you've just perfectly demonstrated the problem people are trying to bring to your attention.
