Tone deaf advert from MN

There are so many threads around about people struggling at this time of year for a variety of reasons.

Then this pops up as I’m reading another thread about Christmas angst

Could Easter ideas not wait until after Christmas? It’s all so consumeristic and just adds to the stress that many are already feeling at this time of year. I feel it’s really badly judged to start posting things like this before Christmas, and if I’m honest it’s in poor taste at any time of year.

You know you can ignore adverts right? They are not instructions.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/12/2023 09:51

Hard to ignore when they pop up in the middle of an unrelated thread.

I obviously didn’t click on it, I just feel it’s unnecessary and very poorly timed.

Poor taste adverts?

Its just an advert for things.

Use an adblocker to get rid of the worst if that bothers you so much

How on earth do you manage to watch telly?

CatVsTree · 17/12/2023 09:57

It's not poor taste but it is annoying and the fact that giving Easter gifts rather than just Easter eggs is now apparently a thing is consumeristic.

LucyInTheParkWithDragons · 17/12/2023 09:58

The whole point of adverts is to sell stuff that you wouldn’t otherwise buy. If you don’t want to see them, is MN premium still a thing?

SkaneTos · 17/12/2023 09:59

I don't really mind so much, but there is a video about how to make a quick Easter bonnet that pops up on Mumsnet for me all year around. I think it's mostly funny!

dudsville · 17/12/2023 10:00

I wonder if this is why shops do the virtue signalling types of advertisements, because for some people the timing of an add for easter matters, etc. It doesn't matter to me and i don't notice the adds, but your post got me thinking about this.

margotrose · 17/12/2023 10:01

Why is it in poor taste?

That's not how adverts work, it's based on your searches etc Mumsnet don't set them. I haven't seen the one you've screenshotted ever

SerpentEndBench · 17/12/2023 10:56

It looks like an advertorial from MNHQ? If so YANBU. No need for Mumsnet Towers to be plugging Easter to their consumers until after Christmas imo.

PaulaPocket · 17/12/2023 10:58

Would using an ad blocker be against MN's terms and conditions? I don't know if it's even possible?

thefallen · 17/12/2023 10:59

YANBU. Pointless consumerist tosh.

It is possible. I don't care if it's against the T&C.

SerpentEndBench · 17/12/2023 11:01

An adblocker won't block content generated by MN anyway I don't think?

I don’t do searches on MN. I just browse active conversations.

This has appeared in the middle of at least 3 threads that I’ve been reading this morning. If there is a way of hiding them (without paying) I’d love to know how!

To clarify, I come here using Google Chrome on a laptop, not a phone.

Lifeasiknowitisout · 17/12/2023 11:19

To be fair. Couldn’t you say that about any advert. People struggling so much. Then an advert for ronseal pops up reminding I need to find the money to repaint my fence in spring to keep it in good condition for as long as I can, so I don’t need to replace it.

PinkFrogss · 17/12/2023 12:24

I mean adverts are typically advertising something that costs money, so are all adverts bad taste?

BIWI · 17/12/2023 16:28

adblockers don't block those kinds of ads

HebeMumsnet · 18/12/2023 10:22

Hi there @Muchtoomuchtodo . Thanks for letting us know about this. Could you let us know which thread you were on when you saw the ad for the Easter page, and we'll take a look? Thank you! Flowers

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/12/2023 11:43

Sorry @HebeMumsnet i can’t find the thread that I first saw it in, but it appeared in the middle of three or four different threads that I was reading over the weekend so it wasn’t a one off.
Another thread was started about this advert too.

Maybe take a break from MN. Understandably, most of the threads will be about Christmas angst as people tend to start threads when they have a problem. Don't let it get you down though - take a break from it all.

Could Easter ideas not wait until after Christmas?

Some people have had Christmas organised since July and maybe want to start on Easter ideas now. It helps plan finances, attendance, all sorts. Couldn't be doing with it myself but you know, it takes all kinds!

It’s all so consumeristic and just adds to the stress that many are already feeling at this time of year.

Christmas/Easter/birthdays - it's all consumerism. You just need to decide how much you want to partake. I don't feel the need to buy everything I see an advert for. Do you?

I feel it’s really badly judged to start posting things like this before Christmas

Why exactly? Christmas stuff was being posted months ago. What's the difference?

and if I’m honest it’s in poor taste at any time of year.

Any time?! What about Easter time, since it's about Easter?!

riotlady · 18/12/2023 12:44

It’s hard to have ads that aren’t consumerist, the literal point is to sell stuff

qpdlurgak · 18/12/2023 12:57

MN is not free, it isn't a charity it's a business, the price you pay for using a site like this is essentially handing over some of your data and being sold to. It's how most of the internet works. If you don't like it, don't use it.

TinselTitts · 18/12/2023 14:14

Oh come on OP

There will be people struggling at every time of year and that'll be the case past, present and future.

If companies weren't allowed to advertise for that reason, there'd be no such thing as adverts!
