Allowing name changes mid-thread

Am I misremembering?

I could've sworn that a few months ago there was a post on Site Stuff by MNHQ saying that we would no longer be able to name change mid-thread. That if we posted a thread or posted on someone else's thread and then tried to name change and post on it again, it would revert back to the original name we used on that thread.

Maybe it was just for on the browser version of MN?

It's just that I keep seeing threads where the OP comes back to the thread under a different username and I didn't think that was possible anymore. It makes it annoying if you're reading the thread via OP-only filter or scanning the thread for the colour-change where the OP has posted.

(I'm using the iOS app.)

For me, if I've already posted on a thread and come back to it some time later after a name change, when I go to post again it automatically reverts to the name I already posted under on that thread. I guess you can post under a different name, but would have to manually change it.

I haven't seen anywhere near as many 'oops is that a namechange fail??' posts lately.

Thanks for getting in touch about this.

On the web version of Mumsnet, it auto-populates the username that you've used before on that thread (although you still do have the option to override and change it).

It doesn't yet do that on the mobile app, so namechange fails will continue to happen in the meantime.

I thought it was to stop people sock-puppeting but if a poster is able to override it then I do wonder what the point of it is...
