I was just looking to see if anyone had posted about today's mass shooting in the US. Setting the date to today, and the search to 'shooting', thread title only, I got 3 results of zero relevance. On looking closer I saw that one title contained the word 'shot' (a misspelling in this case for 'short' and two had the word 'short'.

I tried again with 'gun' and got one result, containing the word 'guy'.

Confused

How on earth does the matching work? Surely it could be better than this?

Hi there @DuesToTheDirt ,

We've just done the same search and found lots of threads returned. Can we just check you're on the main site, not the app, and that you're using this page for advanced search? https://www.mumsnet.com/search/advanced

Main site, not app. I tried again, for 26th October, and got the same results as before.

Hi again @DuesToTheDirt . Ah - looking at the search you've done, it looks like you've searched by thread titles only. If you select 'threads and posts' in that box you should get many more returns back. On that particular topic, for instance, this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4928513-people-with-diagnosed-mental-health-issues-should-not-have-firearms was the most active thread about that story but didn't mention the word 'shooting' in the title, so opening up the search to posts as well as titles should find you a lot more.

But my point is not the number of results. I deliberately picked "Title only" to try to limit the number. My point is that the results that got returned are complete nonsense.

I search for 'shooting' and get 'short', 'short' and 'shot' (the last one potentially relevant if it hadn't been a spelling error, the other results just garbage).

I search for 'gun' and get 'guy'. Seriously now?

It's like random letters are just getting switched out or ignored. Shooting - shot, shoots... fine. Gun - gunning, gunned, guns... fine. But shooting has nothing to do with short and gun has nothing to do with guy!
