Will Mum’s net ever embrace the like button like the rest of the Internet?

I know this has been an issue for at least 20 years, but really move on

No, not an issue maybe, but I’ve been on here for 20 years and it’s been talked about for most of those

I've been on here for many years, and NOBODY has talked about a 'like' button before. Ever. An Edit button, yes. But 'like'? That's a lie, it's never been anything anyone on here has ever talked about.

Also, when somebody post one of those patently ridiculous threads like” I don’t like cheese should I ban the rest of the world from eating cheese ?” only one person needs to reply and says you are a lunatic. It gets 20 million likes and this thread is done.

Lol that never happens on Facebook where you have 300+ replies so why would you think this site would be any different? The like function actually encourages more replies, not less.

NewPinkJacket · 20/10/2023 17:15

I'd like a like button and every single time this thread is started, it seems as though there's a growing number of others who would too.

I think it'd be interesting if you started this thread in AIBU so you can use the vote function and see the percentage of for and against.

If you don't like the format of the forum and prefer different sites then why stay here? I don't even look at any other forums so no idea if they are better or worse but I have enjoyed the format of Mumsnet and the mostly sensible discussions for over 20 years.

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 20/10/2023 17:19

MN format has changed countless times over the years.

I remember the furor when 'trending' was introduced. Some stuck in the mud regulars actually flounced over it 😂😂

DaftQuestionForToday · 20/10/2023 17:22

Nooooooo

No like button!

CesareBorgia · 20/10/2023 17:26

You want 'the rest of the internet' - go and use the rest of the internet! Don't try to turn Mumsnet into a clone of everywhere else. We like it because it's not the same as the rest of the internet.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 20/10/2023 17:29

I hope not. It becomes competitive and I much prefer reading about people's opinions and particularly the reasons for their opinions instead of 'likes'.

Using a like button to 'kill' the thread' - just close the thread if you dislike it so much.

Terfosaurus · 20/10/2023 17:34

One of the things I like about MN is that it's not like the rest of the Internet. Please no like button.

Thanks for sharing the link @BIWI.

You can show your appreciation by clicking the 'thanks' button on a post (on desktop and mobile-only at the moment). We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.
