REPORTING PLEAsE CHECK

Weird non-alphabetic character title threads in Camping - I don’t want to click the headers to report them in case they are hyperlinks, and I suggest others don’t either!

OP posts:
Ostryga · 11/10/2023 07:48

Yes this happens a lot. But it’s not weird characters - it’s just Korean 😂

GunboatDiplomacy · 11/10/2023 07:53

Headers can't be hyperlinks so you'd be safe to click (I've clicked and reported loads of them). They're Korean automated spam, there's been a bunch of them.

Slightly baffled that MNHQ Tech still can't implement a Korean alphabet filter after weeks of this stuff. It's not as if I've ever seen a legitimate Korean language post on MN (and I never will now, because everyone on the site is reporting them instantly - so any poor mum in Seoul posting for suggestions on how to deal with her nightmare MIL is out of luck).

Whinge · 11/10/2023 07:53

This has been going on for weeks. MN are aware and the poor night watch crew are dealing with it on a daily / nightly basis.

Are you alllowed to take a break? I know you volunteer but perhaps if the night watch took a few days off MNHQ might realise just how much of a problem these posts are causing. You shouldn't have to spend hours of your night sorting out repeated spam posts for free. Sad

NiteWotcha · 11/10/2023 08:22

nah it’s fine - HQ realizes the problem (at least I hope they bloody do!) Grin
and we don’t have to be on duty all the time - I’ll hide stuff if I notice it or if some kind MNer alerts the Night Watch etc.
and because I’m not “staff”, I can swear and mess about and drink Gin all night Wink

I also feel a sense of enourmous raw power bwahahaha satisfaction Flowers

Morning, everyone. We're on this again now. Rest assured we're doing all we can about this. Thank you once again to our amazing Night Watchers who are making a huge difference in keeping on top of this while we find a solution.

No the ones I've seen are just squiggles

TeaandHobnobs · 13/10/2023 08:54

@HebeMumsnet They’ve just started up again…

With respect, as a PP points out, a Korean language filter would sort this quite quickly. There were a raft of new spam threads this morning. I know that tech isn't MN's thing and we're all meant to pretend we're sitting around Justine's kitchen table but you're a multi million pound business now.

Second this.

I had a chat with Justine and she says even she would have sorted it by now 😀

Whinge · 16/10/2023 07:12

It's been going on for almost a month now. Clearly MNHQ don't want to bother finding a solution to prevent the spam.

@HebeMumsnet Please can MNHQ sort this out. It's been almost a month and still the spam continues.

It's happened again this morning.

sparklefresh · 17/10/2023 07:48

It's happened again this morning.

Yep, and it seems like it's been happening repeatedly overnight as well. I dread to think how many spam posts were hidden by the night watch. Like I said earlier in the thread, the night watch do an amazing job, but there seems to be no urgency by MNHQ to fix the spam problem as they're not the ones dealing with it. @HebeMumsnet could you please give an update on what MNHQ are doing to stop the constant spam?

IncomingTraffic · 17/10/2023 08:12

It is really crap spam - it’s written in Hangul so it’s basically a big sign saying don’t click on this.

It would definitely help if we could just report it from active though. No one wants to open that.

GunboatDiplomacy · 17/10/2023 08:37

Mind you yesterday we had a huge slew of spam in every European language which might be more difficult to filter automatically.

Whinge · 18/10/2023 07:28

Another day, and still more spam.@HebeMumsnet Please can we get an update on this.

HebeMumsnet · 18/10/2023 12:19

Hi there @Whinge and others. We think we're making a little bit of progress finally. Obviously we can't say too much here as we don't want to alert the spammers to what we're doing behind the scenes, but we're hoping you'll start to see a reduction in the spam soon. More bulletins as events warrant.

Whinge · 19/10/2023 07:15

@HebeMumsnet Thank you for the reply, do you have any idea of how soon we can expect a reduction in the spam? It's been happening daily for over a month now?

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 19/10/2023 07:18

I came to start a thread on this. I report some every morning it feels like.

I dont really get why they do it either. What does it achieve?!

It's often in camping- is it some sort of bot?

KateyCuckoo · 19/10/2023 07:22

I don't think your plan is working, now they've started in telly addicts.

It's weird it's only mumsnet that has such a hard time dealing with such basic issues.

As others have said a Korean language filter would sort out the problem. It's actually quite embarrassing that it's been over a month and the only update we have is, something might happen... soon.
