Not quite right - interlinks between the feminism board

Titerama · 27/09/2023 20:23

Just FYI the new text and linking between the two feminism boards is a bit mucked up and needs a fix.

The one on feminism: chat has the right link to the other one but the text calls it the women’s rights board, which it is the old name from before it became feminism: sex and gender

The one on feminism: sex and gender seems to be missing some of the text, and the link is to the same board rather than to the feminism: chat board

Also, what is modern feminism?

LilyMumsnet · 28/09/2023 09:44

Hi OP

Thanks so much for flagging this - we're looking into it now and will have it fixed ASAP. Flowers

ArabellaScott · 28/09/2023 10:53

I had thought perhaps the two boards were going to be merged back.

Titerama · 28/09/2023 13:22

Wrong link gone, but now no link to feminism chat

And sex and gender board is described as for intersectional feminism 🤔

Weird wording on both pages.

Also, what is modern feminism?

The kind which centres men, particularly white, MC lefty liberal men. 🙄

Bosky · 30/09/2023 03:30

This is really confusing!

At the moment I am seeing this - is this after the "fix" that was supposed to happen ASAP on 28 Nov, 9:44 ?

Feminism: Chat
A forum for feminist chat including modern feminism and feminism theory. See also our Feminism: sex & gender discussion board.

Feminism: Sex & gender discussions
A feminism forum for sex and gender discussions, feminist chat, theory and intersectional feminism.

(With no link in the description to "Feminism: Chat")

There doesn't seem to be much point in there being two Feminism boards. There is so much overlap and sometimes duplication of topics. The women who wanted the split seem to have abandoned ship or they would be kicking up a stink on "Feminism Chat" about "sex & gender" type discussions polluting their space.

The really weird thing is including "intersectional feminism" in the description of "Feminism: Sex & gender discussions".

It was the "intersectional feminists" who wanted the radical feminists booted out of "Feminist Chat" and into a separate "Women's Rights" aka "Sex & Gender" Board so they, the "intersectional feminists", could have "Feminism" all to themselves.

Now, despite having apparently got bored with Mumsnet and cleared off, they have got both "Feminist: Chat" (so-called "modern feminism") AND "Women's Rights" aka "Sex & Gender" ("intersectional feminism").

Nowhere is "radical feminism" mentioned, which is ridiculous if you want to start dividing up Boards into different sorts of feminism as "radical feminism" is the predominant flavour of most feminist posts on both boards - but particularly "Women's Rights" aka "Sex & Gender".

This mess just shows that it never made sense to split FWR in the first place - and that whoever wrote those descriptions has not got the foggiest idea what they are talking about.

SpiderMaam · 30/09/2023 10:28

Intersectionality is now about as fashionable as brown bri nylon underpants.
Has Mumsnet gone retro?
Are we now 2015 Tumblr?

Excellent post (although I'm getting flashbacks to that time they made a Radical Feminism topic to put Dittany in 😬).

I wholeheartedly agree: This mess just shows that it never made sense to split FWR in the first place.

Please consider re-merging the boards MNHQ.

ArabellaScott · 01/10/2023 09:34

True intersectionality is a perfectly legitimate and worthwhile aspect of feminism. Its just when people add men into their definition of feminism that it renders the definition a meaningless oxymoron.

Bosky · 02/10/2023 03:19

Yes I bought an XL box of intersectional feminism and it wasn't until I got home that I noticed a sneaky label on the bottom, "May contain nuts"!!

Genderwoo · 02/10/2023 14:51

These mistakes/changes/bad linkages have still not been fixed. And have not reverted to their old coding state as a place-holding quick remedy either.

Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions
'A feminism forum for sex and gender discussions, feminist chat, theory and intersectional feminism.'

I'm concerned about the primacy of 'intersectional feminism' at the end, as it is already included in the 'theory' part of the remit 'mistake.' Also, 'Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions' alone gets the additional emphasis.

Feminism: chat
'A forum for feminist chat including modern feminism and feminism theory. See also...'

I have my thoughts on why new text was added. We'll see 🤔.

Nuts do make a loud noise rattling around a box, Bosky.

SpiderMaam · 02/10/2023 15:01

Maybe a ‘radical’ needs to be added to the description on both boards?

‘Intersectional & Radical Feminism’.

Going down to one board would be be my preferred option

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2023 15:38

I think the majority of those who use both boards would probably favour a single board. It was only ever a very few who insisted on having the boards separated out - and the 'Chat' board is barely used.

Titerama · 02/10/2023 16:40

The feminism chat board is wanted, and has a valid reason to be there, despite the belittling, sneering and attempts to get it removed by GC feminists.

It’s getting dominated by GC posters and threads, again, and mn aren’t taking much (any?) action to support non GC posters to be honest. This is disappointing, and not for lack of protest and reporting.

Whenever this happens, traffic from non GC posters decreases, because they get harassed and attacked if they comment on those threads without centring GC perspectives.

It baffles me why GC posters are so determined to stop other women from having conversations on a different board. Why is it so hard to accept that there are women on mn who don’t feel the same about gender politics, and who want to have conversations where it isn’t centred.

Reminiscent do the regular refrain of “why are you so keen to shut women up?”

(Not interested in discussing this with GC posters, just holding space for those who aren’t)

OP posts:
SpiderMaam · 02/10/2023 16:56

You are ‘baffled’ that other women think this arbitrary division is negative?

wild.

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2023 21:33

If you see threads on Chat that should be on the other board, ask for them to be moved.

I don't care about there being another board, except that I think some posters don't realise there are two boards and post on 'Chat' thinking it's the old Chat board, or the only or main 'Feminism' board. Which is a shame. Because not many people read/post on 'Chat'.

Have you done a Name Change? If not, this would appear to be your first ever post on Mumsnet:

What business of yours is it if a poster has named changed, having to put the advanced search link in, toxic much? Such a school bully response, bless your little cotton head

Bosky · 03/10/2023 05:45

Oh that touched a nerve! Bless both your little cotton socks!

I think the inference is that if it's a new poster, why do they care so much. I doubt it is a new poster.

I also wish we could have actual conversations about this without all the nonsense. Being disagreed with isn't the same as harassment and attack. I've been a feminist girl and woman for several decades and the debate has always been heated and we all survived the cut and thrust without all this drama. If everyone just wants to be agreed with, a feminist forum probably isn;t the place.

As for 'modern feminism'? Please!

No nerve touched, just seemed a strange response on a site that allows name changes 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely. In fact a discussion board probably isn't the place! It would be nice if we could have discussions, and even disagreement, without drama.

Titerama · 03/10/2023 07:56

There are not enough rolling eye emojis to respond to this - you’ll have to just imagine them.

A classic and entirely predictable “drama” because as per usual, regulars from sex and gender can’t seem to cope with the existence of a feminism board that doesn’t centre the issues they care most about.

Back to the point of this post…

Please MNHQ, could someone fix the weird words and missing links at the trope of the feminism boards? They’re still not right, and it’s adding to friction and confusion.

If, at the same time, they might move some threads from feminism Chat (that have already been reported as needing to be on sex & gender) over to the appropriate board then all the better.

As for 'modern feminism'? Please!

Especially as contemporary feminism is a new wave of Radical Feminism!

Perhaps by ‘modern feminism’ MN meant it in a similar way to ‘Modern Art’? As in abstract & decorative but way past it’s heyday?
