Hiding a thread

I know you can go into a thread and hide it. But is there a way to hide a thread just from the title? I’m already feeling triggered by the title, I don’t want to click on the thread and risk seeing something, just to be able to hide it. I want to see the title and go “nope” and make it disappear.

Hi @Spodey - which version of the site are you using? On the iOS app in the list of threads you can just swipe the title of the thread to the left and hit the Hide icon, meaning you don't have to see any of the opening post.

On the mobile site you can click on the thread title and when it takes you to the thread you should see a down arrow in a circle at the right of the page, at the same level as the topic like so -

Talk > AIBU? v

If you click on the down arrow, you'll have the option to hide the thread - on my phone I can do this without seeing the opening post as there's a Promoted by Mumsnet advert at the top of the page.

On the desktop site, the Watch thread, Flip and Hide tabs are at the very top of the thread, before the title, so you should be able to click Hide without seeing the content of the thread.

Hi, I was looking for functionality like you described for the app. Both mobile and desktop sites in the browser require you to click on the thread before you can hide it, thus risking you seeing some of the content. Even if you manage not to see any of the content, just clicking on certain thread titles is upsetting. Facebook is particularly good at solving this, you click the x as soon as you see upsetting content and it vanishes. I was wondering if MN had this feature but obviously it’s only in the app.

You can hide it without opening it on the mobile version. If it's in active for instance click on the three dots to the right of the title and it gives you the option to watch or hide

Thanks @Redglitter - you're absolutely right, on the mobile site threads in the Active Conversation list do have the three dots, with the option to watch or hide, so that should help the OP to some extent.

Threads in individual topics don't currently have that option, but the down arrow that's level with the topic title does give the option to hide the thread, and this comes above the opening post so it should be possible to hide it without reading the content.

I would like this functionality too!

I don’t get an option to ‘hide’ when I click on the 3 dots on the title in active - the only option that comes up is ‘watch’. (Mobile browser).

I also don’t get the option to Hide when I click on the three dots. Only Watch.

Hi OP

At the moment, there isn't a way to hide without going in but it's something we're looking into.

This used to be a function on the mobile site where you could hide a topic at the title in any of the boards a long time ago. I used this function a lot.

Then there was that big MN data breach in 2019 so I deleted my account and rejoined with new details and this function completely disappeared. I asked in Site Stuff at the time but mnhq denied the function ever existing. It has since come back but only in the active.

It's a basic feature on open source forum software. It needs to be brought back for all the boards not just active.
