You really need moderators during the night

Come on, this is way beyond the night watch pay check.

How hard is it to have a couple of moderators keeping an eye on the forum?

It was the same last night.

Volunteer cheque Wink I don't think they're paid but I might be wrong.

ohdamnitjanet · 25/09/2023 05:17

Who’s offering to do it for free then? All night? They’ve been removed pretty fast seeing as it’s only 5.15am.

IncompleteSenten · 25/09/2023 05:30

Either that or suspend new registrations at night.

I doubt they'll pay someone. For some reason they don't feel it's worth it.

sparklefresh · 25/09/2023 06:22

I totally agree OP. I can't believe that a site as big as MN still can't be bothered to pay a couple of mods overnight and is relying on volunteers. It's embarrassing and creates a significant vulnerability.

No one should be doing it for free. That's the point. It should be something MN pay for.

MN said they were working on a fix for this persistent spammer. No sign of it yet but how hard could it be to block posts with this same text in Korean, given this is all the spammer ever posts?

100%. It's utterly embarrassing that they cannot be bothered to pay for moderation over night. Poor night watch must be thoroughly fed up of trying to resolve it night after night.

pompomdaisy · 25/09/2023 06:35

And they still haven't cleared all of them! Yes MN pay your workers 😡

Fairly challenging, it's highly unlikely they're logging on using a static IP address and blocking content by say language isn't easy (and not necessarily something they should be doing). Probably the answer is to try and curtail the number of threads someone can make in a set time!

I do think it's bad it's run by volunteers, but then again a lot of websites and forums are, not saying its right and of course companies should always strive to be better, but it's not unusual. It depends really as most people use this website for free don't they, not sure of the breakdown of premium users but I'd hazard a guess more people don't pay that than do. It's more expensive to pay night staff than day staff, perhaps if they add yet more adverts or charge everyone it'd be more feasible. I'd rather just scroll past tbh.

We're really grateful to our Nightwatch volunteers, especially at times like this. They do a great job but are never obliged to be 'on duty' or to clear up huge messes, and generally we don't find we need full moderation coverage in the dead of night. The recent influx of spam is incredibly annoying but it isn't typical of what we'd see on average. Moderation coverage is something that we always keep under review though, so we welcome feedback on it.

Any1Else · 25/09/2023 12:21

There was some blatantly and unarguably horrible, obscene stuff last night. Reported but was surprised the volunteers didn’t seem to have the authority to conclusively delete - they could only ‘hide’ it until morning.

gerties · 25/09/2023 12:21

I think it's more than adequate coverage for the dead of night, and the Nightwatch are on the ball and do a great job. I contacted them recently about something. It's something I'd happily help with (for free!) too, if ever needed.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 25/09/2023 12:21

It's crazy that a site that has 100+ employees with a multi-million pound wage bill (was stated on a thread about the costs during covid) doesn't have any paid staff, even on an occasional turns rota, overnight.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 27/09/2023 04:47

Boards full of spam again tonight.

If appointing mods overnight isn’t the answer then make it so that as soon as a thread is reported as spam it is automatically hidden. You have the ability to do this, it already happens with certain threads being reported a certain number of times.
