Why am I seeing "promoted by Mumsnet" ads again in MN premium?

They've started filling up half the page on the mobile website this morning. And there's big blank spaces where I presume other ads are meant to go as well.

Already cleared cookies and logged out and in again.

Using an S10 with latest version of chrome.

The top half of the page on active convos is just blank space, if I refresh then sometimes a "promoted by Mumsnet" thing appears in the blank space and sometimes it stays blank. And then there's random blank gaps between threads too...

Yep, same thing here, very annoying. It's making the pages take longer to load too.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 20/09/2023 15:11

Also getting ads disguised as threads which is also annoying

rogdmum · 20/09/2023 15:12

Same here. It’s very annoying

Yes to all the above. This used to happen every few weeks, and was solved by logging out and in again every time, but when the site replatformed last year it stopped happening. Now nothing is working and it's doing my swede in!

@MNHQ is this a glitch

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 20/09/2023 16:23

Hello there! Premium users don't get display ads (the big visual ads on site) but they will still see native "promoted by Mumsnet" content. The reason why you might not have been seeing them recently is because there's been a bug in the system but Premium membership doesn't stop these types of ads. The reason they are blank may be because you're using an adblocker - so if you want to avoid blank spaces you'll need to disable that. Thank you.

I'm not using an adblocker. The spaces are blank because it takes ages for the ads to load, if I wait about 15 seconds then ads appear in them.

And I've subscribed to premium since the very first month it started, and never seen these ads-posing-as-threads in all that time. Never. So it's not a bug, it is something new, that makes my premium subscription pointless!

I'm not using an ad blocker either

There's a huge number of adverts which look like posts & the 'promoted' ads have never been a thing either

Are we stuck with them @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 20/09/2023 18:20

Same and same. No ad blocker and I've never had these before. If this is the way it is supposed to be I will reconsider my premium membership as it is slowing the site down in the same way as other ads which is my main reason for paying for premium.

Exactly this.

We don't all live in London with superfast broadband. We can't even get fibre out here in the sticks so ads slow down my browsing considerably, and I thought a fiver a month was fair to speed up my MN experience. But if the change that happened about 1pm today is permanent then there's no point in me continuing with Premium! I might as well sack it off and get an adblocker instead.

It’s incredibly annoying. Here’s what it looks like for me now. For every 6 threads within a sub forum, there are two “promoted” threads which are of absolutely no interest to me and have nothing to do with the forum.

I won’t keep my premium subscription if this is what it’s going to be like going forward

ShowOfHands · 20/09/2023 23:24

Me too.

Premium member since it's inception and never seen a promoted thread. Suddenly, I've got dozens, as well as ads pretending to be threads and white gaps (I don't use an ad blocker).

Can you just clarify 100% that this is here to stay and if so, I'll cancel my membership.

SiobhanSharpe · 20/09/2023 23:28

Hear, hear. This makes paying for 'Premium' worthless.

Myfavouritedog · 21/09/2023 00:00

For fucks sake! I am in the US and don’t get the benefit of any of the other items UK members get (and pay more) and now am bombarded with ads, you have to be kidding. That is absolutely taking the piss.

Myfavouritedog · 21/09/2023 00:03

As @ShowOfHands says, if this is staying I will cancel my membership. The only benefit I got was no ads and you have got around it this way!

NotReallySureWhatToThink · 21/09/2023 05:50

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet what's the deal then? This is not how it's always been, this has never been the case since I subscribed to MN Premium way back when it was first a thing. The number of "promoted by Mumsnet" ads and threads that have appeared since yesterday make it completely pointless having a Premium subscription.

I'd really appreciate a proper answer, not just being told that I've always seen these posts. Like ShowOfHands, if this really is a permanent change to how MN Premium works then I will cancel the subscription.

Following on from my post last night, the more I am seeing these promoted posts, the more they are annoying me. They are sneaky, the way that they are designed to look like proper threads - it is very stealthy and feels underhanded, like we are being tricked into viewing ad content.

Definitely. And they are pushing out genuine discussion. I am never going to click on the promoted threads (adverts in all but name) but they seem to be taking up more and more space. I get that MN needs to make money but this feels underhand.

moonriverandme · 21/09/2023 11:39

Me too, I thought it was just me & maybe there was a glitch. I checked to see if I was still a premium member as I was confused about the appearance of the page & the ADs appearing as threads of which there appears to be a number taking up space. Hmm.

GrandmaMazur · 21/09/2023 12:14

Ah, this is really annoying. Another premium member here who has never had all these random ads pretending to be threads in the middle of actual threads.

If this is how it’s going to be from now I will rethink my premium membership- I’ve also paid since you first introduced premium.

teawamutu · 21/09/2023 14:24

Agree with all the PP who can't see the point of a Premium subscription if I'm stuck with these fake threads.

I could just use an adblocker; I don't because I wanted to support MN in gratitude for holding the line on women's rights.

Not going to make a kneejerk decision, BUT I really hate these threads.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 21/09/2023 14:25

@mnhq would we be able to get an update on this? Clearly there are lots of people who agree that this isn't a return to the 'correct' ways following a short term glitch - lots of us have been premium subscribers since the very beginning and have never had these ads.

blueirises · 21/09/2023 15:02

Same here. We are being gaslit about this being how it's always been. I've sometimes looked at Mumsnet on a work tablet without logging in, and it has these promoted, thread-like ads. I've always thanked God for Premium on my phone and laptop, and the absence of these intrusions.

NotReallySureWhatToThink · 21/09/2023 16:46

My MN has now gone back to how it was 48 hours ago Confused the promoted threads have gone!
