Search function is now rubbish!

Or is it just me? I literally type '50th birthday present' and get threads that don't contain even one of those words! I've tried typing a celeb name and I get nothing even when I know I've been reading a thread about them a day or two beforehand. Anyone else?

Hi there @nothingcomestonothing . Thanks for flagging this. Can you let us know what device and browser you're using, or whether you're on the app?

Scampuss · 20/09/2023 12:21

Are you using the search icon or the 'advanced search' tab? The latter is way better and nearly as good as old AS.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/09/2023 12:22

Yep, I think it’s crap too. I’m on iPhone.

SlipSlidinAway · 20/09/2023 12:24

I haven't been able to search on a poster's name for ages - used to be able to.

For example, I just clicked on the search icon, typed in Scampuss and got a 'no results' message 🤷‍♀️

SlipSlidinAway · 20/09/2023 12:25

Also on iPhone

nothingcomestonothing · 20/09/2023 12:25

Ok good it's not just me.

Using Chrome on an android phone.

Scampuss thanks for the tip, you're right advanced search is better!

You need to use this one for any sort of actual functionality!

Search function is now rubbish!
Steev · 20/09/2023 16:51

It's been beyond useless for months

MsFogi · 20/09/2023 16:55

Yes I agree - it used to be fabulous, now it is crap on Safari

Butterkist8 · 20/09/2023 17:14

Yes I agree. It's almost impossible to search for previous posts by a user and when searching for threads using key words I get random threads or really out of date threads when I know there was a fairly recent one.

I'm using the app on iPhone.

Hi OP

We would recommend advanced search for detailed searches!

nothingcomestonothing · 21/09/2023 14:51

Not to be rude, but what is considered detailed?

Searching '40th birthday party' or 'Amanda Holden' seems a pretty simple search to me, but those are the kinds I've got either no results or results which have nothing to do with the search query. What kind of search can the normal search function handle?

Hi OP

We would recommend advanced search for detailed searches!

Honestly - is that the extent of your response? It's hardly 'detailed' to search on someone's name and be told there are no matches when the name clearly belongs to a poster Hmm

Why have an 'ordinary' search facility if it doesn't work?

Pretty poor response from you imo.

Yamadori · 26/09/2023 17:03

The ordinary search function is pretty hopeless. One of my hobbies is bonsai, and I just searched the word bonsai to see what happens.

Most of the results were about Oliver Bonas and Helena Bonham Carter. 😂

HanarCantWearSweaters · 26/09/2023 17:18

If the basic search is useless MNHQ then why isn’t it just removed?

SlipSlidinAway · 26/09/2023 17:38

@LilyMumsnet - no response? Mumsnet has a search function that doesn't work and we just have to accept that? Confused
