Troll registering to post rape denial comments

On the Dispatches / Russell Brand threads tonight there are hindered a of posters with generic usernames with numbers (you know the kind) who pop up to say something outrageous about women and victims, use the same language 'trial by media/witch hunt' and make false claims eg 'nothing criminal has been claimed'.

I know nothing can really be done to stop people registering for this, but is there a way to tell if these are bots or coordinated registrations? Can you tell from your end if you've had a spike in registrations today and therefore be able to pause registrations temporarily in future if you suspect something similar will happen?

If so, there are quite a lot of posts that might need to be looked into.

It’s all the gaslighting “why didn’t they report to the police” posts that get to me. Surely, by now, we all know that rape has been effectively decriminalised, yet up they pop with their disingenuous posts.

Yes - I think it's important to understand whether this is coming from new registrations, or if this is genuinely how the usership of MN think.

If the latter, I don't think it can be a community I feel comfortable being part of.

Thanks for raising this; we do understand your concerns. We know only too well that trolls will inevitably join threads like this to post offensive content. We are keeping an eye on these threads but we've no evidence of anything coordinated at this stage.

Please do keep reporting any posts that you have concerns about; it's usually fairly obvious at our end when someone is here just to cause trouble and we are making reports like this a priority.
