It is pointless.

Reply button?
Is that just on the app?

SophiaElizabethGrace · 10/09/2023 23:02

It doesn't appear to work. I'm confused

Talipesmum · 10/09/2023 23:03

Agree - I only use the website, and it does nothing - it just lets you add a post. Nothing to indicate you are replying to anyone in particular.

MK19590 · 10/09/2023 23:11

I didn't notice the reply button before. Is it in any way different to the "quote" option when responding to a specific poster?

Talipesmum · 10/09/2023 23:26

It’s different in that it doesn’t quote the person you’re “reply”ing to, or indicate in any way that you’re referring to their post!

greengobbledygook · 11/09/2023 00:52

@WhoPutCrabsticksInMyBedroom

If you click reply and type the @ it pops up with the users in the thread.

Why is it pointless?

WandaWonder · 11/09/2023 01:07

What have I missed? I press reply and reply

Hawkins0009 · 11/09/2023 01:15

The reply function is odd

But so does “add post” at the bottom. It’s just the same as adding a generic post. No indication who you are replying to.

Exactly. It is no different from before there was a reply button. If hitting the reply button and then using the @ symbol meant that the pp you’re replying to was at the top then I would see a point to it. But it doesn’t even do that.

Plus, my edit button is no longer there. Did the reply button replace it?

You’ve always been able to tag users.

As others say, the reply button is pointless when we already have the quote button, which does what you actually need.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/09/2023 01:47

Yep, I thought it must have been the new quote button but it just reply’s with no reference to what you’re replying to

WhoPutCrabsticksInMyBedroom · 11/09/2023 22:52

Yes, it does nothing on the Web. I click it thinking it is going to tag in the user I am replying to but it doesn't.

I keep reading posts from people that have replied to a post thinking that it replies to the post when it doesn't. Annoying.

OP posts:
DappledThings · 11/09/2023 22:54

I started a thread saying the same thing months ago. Just got the generic "we'll look into" response.

It isn't new, it's always been pointless. Leads to loads of incomprehensible threads where people have hit reply, not unreasonably assumed that will actually be a reply to a particular post and just had am unlinked new post created.

It was nearly a year ago. Time flies!

Reply doesn't do anything | Mumsnet

The Reply option in posts doesn't actually create a reply. It just takes you to the text box so you can a post to the thread. A lot of posters under...

DrFoxtrot · 11/09/2023 23:08

I'm on the app and there is no add post button on a thread, just the reply, which I have used to post this.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/09/2023 23:10

If they got rid of it, we'd be back to four buttons and I'd hopefully stop hitting report instead of bookmark all the time. My muscle memory is strong!

AliciaLime · 11/09/2023 23:11

I suppose, depending on how you have your screen formatted, that it does at least scroll to the message box for you. But that does encourage replying without reading the full thread 😆

LittleBearPad · 11/09/2023 23:13

Replacing reply with the quote button would be a lot more useful.

YourNameGoesHere · 11/09/2023 23:16

People have been saying this for years as shown clearly on this thread but honestly the introduction of the super useful quote feature has made it all a million times more fucking pointless.

I've genuinely lost track of how many times someone has obviously clicked it thinking it will respond to that specific poster and therefore their response is basically garbled nonsense because it doesn't have the context of the post they thought they were quoting to help it makes sense.

Reply is also, as I've said for a while now, a really stupid name for what is essentially just add a post.

I agree.

The reply button is pointless. Also hiding quote behind 3 dots means lots of users don't even know it's there, so they use reply as they expect that do the same thing.
