Name changes and returning to old threads

I've just responded to a message on a thread that I had previously posted on, referencing my earlier post. I then realised that I had name changed in the interim... then noticed that my new response was under the earlier name I had used on the thread, but that when I exited the thread I was back to my new name.
This is a great feature but I'm interested to know how it works as I have frequently seen posts in the past with name change fails... is it a new feature, or are there specific circumstances where the user name reverts?

Thanks - I had a quick scan through earlier threads before posting, but clearly not a very thorough one. I'll have a read.
