Please can we have one of these? The app makes it worse I think, people don't RTFT or even look at the OPs updates and it ends up being a mess.

The 'edit a pdf'thread today is a great case in point.

Maybe they could change colour? Could clicking on the thread go straight to the OP latest update?

Hi OP

Thanks for the suggestion - we'll have a chat about it in the office.

YesitsBess · 02/08/2023 21:53

Thanks Lily, I'm off work poorly this week so expect mild hectoring. 😊

If the mobile version gave the "see only OP's posts" option it would help

Lougle · 03/08/2023 15:11

When posting on the mobile web, the message box gives a heads up that the thread is old. Is that not enough?

YesitsBess · 03/08/2023 15:12

@Brefugee do you mean the app or the mobile Web version? I'm android and I get that option.

@Lougle sometimes this can happen in a matter of hours. Yesterday there were two threads I was on that started as one fairly innocuous subject, and ended up somewhere else entirely!

No - there are threads that are a few days old and OP has updated but people have just read the first post and giving advice based on that and not the update.

Lougle · 03/08/2023 15:52

Ahh I see your point. Actually, I suggested it on a recent thread I was on 😊so I should have thought it through!

It's tricky, isn't it? Do you have a button the OP can press and have a 'jump to update' link, like the 'see all threads' link? Who gets to decide whether things have moved on? Does the OP have to message MNHQ, who decides that the thread has moved on sufficiently...tricky.

YesitsBess · 03/08/2023 15:57

@Lougle I've been pondering this. I like the 'jump to update' idea. The OP could be in control of that then.

App - sorry I'm easily confused!
Android. It is super basic and annoying

FictionalCharacter · 03/08/2023 16:27

Jump to update is a great idea. It’s frustrating to see a stream of “why don’t you do x” when OP has explained, often individually to several posters, that she has tried x or can’t do x.
If only we could have a “bypass this bunfight between 2 posters that’s derailing the thread” button too!

YesitsBess · 03/08/2023 16:28

Oh I tried the app and couldn't get on with it at all. Quite incredible how MN managed to make things even worse on the new app!

I think it's actually changed the whole way the site works, on the mobile version on my android, even if I haven't commented I go back to where I was on a long thread. Now it seems like everyone reads the first post and then comments and don't return. Definitely less fun!

EarringsandLipstick · 03/08/2023 20:05

I find the app good, much prefer it to the web version. I suppose it's whatever you are most familiar with.

I honestly don't think anything will really prevent posters not reading updates, other posts, all OP's posts and just proceeding to post their own thoughts. For most of us, the clamour to post our views is too enticing!

Brefugee · 04/08/2023 07:28

the app is fine in that it works. But that is it for me. You can't see all OPs posts, and you can't delete watched threads without clicking on the thread, or scrolling way back to the top (that is also missing: a "back to top" button)

Brefugee · 04/08/2023 07:28

what i mean is: I use the app if i really really want to look at MN and i don' thave my laptop with me

PearlHandle · 04/08/2023 07:34

I really think you should stop people being able to quote the OP.

That's part of the problem I think. People waltzing on to long threads, quoting the OP, writing their one and a half line response and leaving.

It's become a new way of using the site. People are just responding to the initial post instead of reading and seeing things have moved on.

Isthisexpected · 04/08/2023 07:37

I'd only be in favour of this if under the OP of the thread's control, otherwise someone else might instigate it when the OP still wanted replies across the broad spectrum even though overall the discussion has moved on.

I’d be tempted to phrase the warning along the lines of ‘Read all the OP’s posts before commenting, or you’re likely to waste people’s time & look like a right twit.’

Lougle · 04/08/2023 07:39

I agree @PearlHandle . Some boards particularly are seen as AIBU rather than their actual category. Legal: 'Am I allowed to do x?' Poster A 'Well I think you're absolutely morally bankrupt if you do.' Poster B 'That is within the law'. Poster C 'I bet you sell babies as a side hustle.'

EauNeu · 04/08/2023 07:42

What would be great is if OP can add to their first post an update.. That's how it's done on reddit. Do the post apears like:

AIBU to hate pineapple on pizza?

,Update I have changed my mind, I now love pineapple on puzzA

mondaytosunday · 04/08/2023 08:32

I use the app snd I recall there used to be a 'see OP's posts' thing before. I also don't get voting anymore (not that I care about that). But it's annoying having to trawl through dozens and dozens of posts to find an update.

Is there something the app does that the mobile website doesn't? I see so many posts about what it doesn't do that I wonder why anyone chooses it

i dislike the app. It has zero functionality outside of "watch" thread "unwatch thread" and "bookmark" that i can see.

Or am i missing something?

YesitsBess · 06/08/2023 13:36

Nope. You're right. Can't stand the thing and don't use it.

CornishGem1975 · 06/08/2023 13:38

You can definitely see just OPs post on the app. I literally just did it.
