Commenting on a blog

I want to leave a comment on an MN blog.
But I dont understand why I need to give my email address. Just because I want to communicate something to someone on that platform does not mean I want them to have my email.

make one up?
[email protected]

or

[email protected]

just tested it and it works... ..no validation that name/email exist - just that they exist/are syntactically valid.

Tortington · 27/02/2008 09:44

do you think that this person will e-mail you? is i a likley character trait o theirs

Tech · 27/02/2008 10:28

Hi JV, it's because non-mumsnetters can comment as well as members. So we can't ask for a nickname. The first time there's a new comment from a new email address the system holds it in a moderation queue for the blog author to approve. Once it's approved, you can comment as much as you like. As GeekBoy says, it doesn't have to be real.

If you don't put in place some validation like that, you end up with spam robots posting loads of advertising comments.

Having said that, we have on our things to do list a project to add a "mumsnetter comment" bit to the blogs so you can log in with your usual MN login.

hunkermunker · 27/02/2008 13:45

Would that mean that the IP address wouldn't show when you commented, Tech?

Is it just email address? I made a comment on LL's blog from home which was moderated, but when I posted from work (same email address, but different IP ) it still said 'awaiting moderation'

OK Tech - not a big deal really - just seemed like a faff.

Custy - Didn't see this earlier - think we have covered it since?

can we get rid of moderation, tech? it's a pain. or at least have the option not to moderate?

JeremyVile · 27/02/2008 13:56

yes, i think so. it's too much like hard work, the moderating. let us decide to opt in, i say.

can't you have a 'can you see this code lkjsdflksjj' thing? doesn't that stop spammers?
