1000 post limit- option to automatically start new thread

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2023 11:07

I am sure I've read there is a reason behind the 1000 post limit but is it possible to have an automatic link to the new thread/button to create ongoing thread with same posters watching?
Currently either
A.
People start a new thread after 900 posts and two conversations go on concurrently on both the old and the new thread.
B.
Multiple people start a new thread until they are eventually merged/everyone migrates to one
C.
Everything stops mid conversation whilst everyone else is waiting for someone to start.
D.
People can't find new thread, post about looking for new thread, or post on new thread asking for old thread details.

Apologies and this has probably been covered but I'm currently on a thread where C has happened just as I want to reply to a poster.

Hi OP

Thanks so much for the suggestion. We'll discuss it here in the office!

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2023 18:26

Thank you for looking into it- it would certainly improve my MN experience.

If you did that would you be stuck with the same name you had been using on that thread? I change mine frequently precisely because I don't want to be able to be searched back through a string of long running threads as I am on several (people who know me pick up my new names easily enough)

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2023 18:33

You can always change your name regardless of what you started as, but it would be good if it remembered the last name you used.

You can no longer change it mid way through a thread though, you are stuck with it till the thread fills up, so it wouldn't be good if it then carried onto the next one.

You can. You just need to manually change it. It automatically defaults to the last name you've posted as but you can swap

Keykat · 13/07/2023 18:42

Yes I agree with your proposal OP. Let's see what happens. I don't really care about name changing, that would be up to the individual. All for the greater good say I!

Thankfully you can, as I'm an obsessive name changer

Dumbonellyfant · 13/07/2023 18:48

You can change your name through a thread

But this is a good suggestion- I miss when you've been on a busy thread with strong debate and reach 1k and takes you hours to find where people have migrated to by which point the topic has moved on so far none of your points you wanted to address seem relevant anymore

EversoDetermined · 13/07/2023 18:58

They stopped that a few months ago. I have just changed mine and it is still showing as this one.

WhisperingAutistic · 13/07/2023 19:08

I think this is a really good idea!

You have to go into the tab where it says 'your username' and then enter which ever one you choose. It does keep the name you started with (so mine has kept handprints, not HasANewName) but I can swap and change. Not ideal but so much better than when you had to go to settings

Apart from the regular threads that have multiple threads (like brave babes, strictly etc) I think almost any thread with 1000 posts is usually a troll tbh!

EversoDetermined · 13/07/2023 19:39

Yes, you've always been able to do that but it's a hassle to remember to do it every time you post on long and busy threads. I am on about 5 different ones that have been running for many years and I really don't want to be stuck with the same name on them indefinitely or have to manually change it for every single post.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2023 19:49

Not always, used to be stuck with one name and change manually, but I agree, it would be useful if each thread remembered your last used name, I am also on long running threads (although they are easier to keep track of as someone normally takes charge and sets up a new thread- although see A-)

@ShirleyPhallus fair point, but some evolve and burn bright for a short while and like @Dumbonellyfant you have a point but by the time you find the new thread it has all moved on.

OP posts:
EversoDetermined · 13/07/2023 20:13

It would be fine so long as from your first post in the new thread it used your current name, I just wouldn't want to be made to carry on with whatever I had been using at the start of the first thread.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 18/07/2023 16:59

My question would be whether this facility should be limited to the OP of the original thread. If the thread is sensitive, the OP might not want it to be continued indefinitely.
