Benefits board?

AnonAnom940 · 03/07/2023 17:00

Hi, where is the best topic to post benefit related questions?
Or is there a specific board?
I've had some really unhelpful and condescending hurtful comments when all I wanted was support.

Oh that would be great if there was one. Sometimes it would be really handy to ask questions and advice from people that may know .

Hi OP

We don't have a specific board dedicated to receiving benefits but we're happy to keep an eye on this discussion and see if there's a need for one.

If you have any concerns about posts on the boards, please do report them to us using the report button. We're always more than happy to take a look. Flowers

Brilliant idea.

Try money matters?

AutumnCrow · 03/07/2023 19:02

Money Matters is the best place, as pp said. Do not go near AIBU.

AnonAnom940 · 03/07/2023 19:16

@heartofglass23 I did, but you amongst other posters were not helpful or supportive. One poster was really quite hurtful.

Money matters it seems is NOT the place for support or advice about benefits.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Some posters on MN can be absolute knobs.

A dedicated board could be an excellent resource

But

Unfortunately I think it would attract the 'benefit-bashers' more than AIBU

I agree.
The 'flat screen TV' lot would be out in force.
Honestly, I think you're better off on Money Saving Expert.

Sorry you've had some frustrating experiences. I find AIBU is the worst for it.

As much as I think it'll be a good idea for those who use it correctly, it'll definitely attract people looking to bash/upset others.

AutumnCrow · 03/07/2023 20:28

What was it you wanted to know about, OP? Happy to try and help here.

Kendodd · 03/07/2023 20:28

Having said that though, 'in work benefits' makes me really angry, not with the claimant though. How can we have structured our society in such a way that people working full time need public money because they can't afford to feed their kids? Meanwhile, their super rich employers have got so much money they can travel into fucking space.

PencilsInSpace · 03/07/2023 21:08

Posters who come here seeking benefits advice are frequently bombarded by people demanding that they justify why they're claiming, or telling them that some completely normal arrangement they have in place constitutes fraud. Or if it doesn't then it should.

Or a bunch of well-meaning people who were on benefits ten years ago turn up to share their outdated advice and what they reckon.

Or some clueless but possibly well-meaning people might drop in to advise OP to cancel their TV and phone contracts, sell their stuff on vinted or pick blackberries (seasonal).

Meanwhile OP just wanted help with a PIP form or to sort out a UC fuckup or to work out if they'd be able to still feed their children if they finally found the courage to leave some abusive fucker.

That's why a benefits board would be a good idea.

It could possibly be a magnet for benefit bashers but I don't think so. It's one thing to froth away in AIBU, quite another to deliberately go on a board called 'Benefits' and have a pop at posters who are very obviously posting there for advice and support.
