An update on our mobile apps

Hi all...

I wanted to give an update on the problems that our app users have been facing for the past few weeks, what has happened, and what we're doing moving forward to improve the apps for everyone.

Apologies that this is long, but I wanted to be transparent and give as much detail as possible due to the number of problems that we've been facing.

What has been happening
When we launched the new website just over a year ago that necessitated everyone who uses the mobile apps to login again.

When a user logs into the apps, we generate a token that the app uses to know that the user is logged in. Without this token, features in the app that need you to be logged in (Threads I'm On, posting threads and replies, etc) ask you to log in.

The token that is provided has an expiration date, and when the expiration date is passed, the token is removed. The app detects that the token is no longer valid and automatically asks for a new token.

Unfortunately, there was a bug in the app's code which meant that it didn't do this, and tokens were passing their expiration date, causing them to be removed.

This was compounded by a further problem with the app's code which meant that when the token became invalid, the app still showed that you are logged in, but attempting to post a thread or reply would fail.

Logging out of the app and logging back in again would correctly get a new token, and the app would then work normally.

This is why we've been asking our users to log out and log back in again over the past few weeks.

What we did
When we diagnosed the underlying problem, we made a change that would extend the lifetime of the tokens indefinitely. This meant that any tokens that were currently valid would not expire and the problem we were seeing would be isolated to as few users as possible and the problem would stop as users who were affected logged out and back in again.

Unfortunately, this introduced an unintended problem that meant that all tokens were removed yesterday. We didn't notice this initially as the effect was the same as the expiration issue, and we incorrectly assumed that it was the same problem.

It wasn't until 4pm yesterday that we discovered the deletion had taken place. We subsequently restored all of the tokens from our backups and fixed the bug that caused the removal.

This restored the normal functionality for the vast majority of users.

We understand how frustrating it is to be asked to log out and back into the app. However, we're confident that if you are having problems with the app doing this once will fix the problem.

What we're doing moving forward
We've been running a survey for the past few weeks about our mobile apps and have had hundreds of responses from our users.

We know that there are multiple problems that need to be addressed, and features that exist on the website that aren't available in the apps, but our current app infrastructure makes this difficult to achieve.

Behind the scenes, we're actively working on improving the app experience to address all of these problems, and to provide a more stable, robust app that has parity with the features available on the site.

You will start to see this work come to fruition over the coming months.

Once again, we're truly sorry for the problems that have occurred over the past few weeks for our app users. We're confident that we've fixed the underlying issues now, and that logging out and logging in again will resolve any lingering issues for the small number of users experiencing them.

Thanks

Matt

Thank you @MattTech I look forward to the new, improved app 🤞

TheMouseIsAsGoodAsDeadAlready · 05/05/2023 19:34

Ok, I'm pretty naive when it comes to tech stuff, but @MattTech why bother with having the app at all if its functionality is so dreadful?

I don't use it, I've always used my chrome browser, but I've been here a few years (with different names) and the complaints about the app have been pretty much constant.

If you don't want, or can't provide, a fully functional app version of MN, then why bother with half (quarter?) measures? Why not just say to people using a phone or a tablet/iphone that they will need to use an internet browser to access the site up front? (We all have the ability to do that, whether we're iphone or android users)

Why piss of so many users by having versions of MN on apps that simply don't work the way they should?

Ok, I may be missing something really obvious (as I say, really tech illiterate!) but to me it makes no sense to have an app version of MN at all unless it works, has the same functionality as, and is supported/updated in the same ways as the browser version.

<Dons hard hat as techie people come and take me to task!>

Well I've been attempting to change my username but not seen how the app lets me do it.

The effect of the log out and log in is that it is now changed, so I am happy 😁 posting this in case anyone else has had this problem - this could be a solution.

JaneJeffer · 05/05/2023 19:42

Nooo @TheMouseIsAsGoodAsDeadAlready I can't stand the desktop version on my phone. The app may have its faults but it's much easier to use!

SummerSazz · 05/05/2023 19:52

I agree - the app is all I use! I'm not on it that much but I don't have any major problems with it. Had to login again a few weeks ago but nothing more bothersome than that

Three lines at the top right of the app, then select my mumsnet and you can name change from there in the app, :)

unlikelychump · 07/05/2023 20:08

Don't have any three lines!!

Are you on iOS?

unlikelychump · 08/05/2023 16:43

Nope.

Plankingplanks · 08/05/2023 20:19

Are you planning on doing anything to the android app, or, as usual are you just focussing on the Apple one?

MattTech · 09/05/2023 10:40

@TheMouseIsAsGoodAsDeadAlready Thanks for your comments. The functionality that the apps do have works quite well. They're simple and quick to use, but updating them to add new features is extremely difficult technically.

Our apps have been around for a long time and, even though they have problems, we wouldn't want to take them away from the users that use them.

@Plankingplanks We're planning to make improvements to both apps, and bring them into parity with each other. We want both apps to have the same set of features, and also to add features that are missing at the moment that are available on the website.

We're actively working on this behind the scenes, and we should have more news to share in the coming months.

Thanks

@MaMattTech tha ks for responding, although as I have (under many many usernames) have complained before (I've even sent you videos), the Android app is so bad that it is impossible, to actually start a thread on! You can comment on threads, but you can't start one! To start a thread you have to go on the Web or use an ipad!

Plankingplanks · 09/05/2023 21:14

@MattTech stupid app has now started to tag incorrectly too!!

LookItsMeAgain · 21/12/2023 15:03

I've uninstalled the app on my mobile phone as it wasn't as good as the browser version and as I have a browser on my phone I can use that instead.

Why are MN spending hours on an app that a tiny number of people will download and use when there are issues on the actual site to do with the Reply/Add Message/Quote option that has been brought to the attention of MN admins on many occasions?

This is actually an old thread about app updates- it was bumped by a spammer. That being said, there are plenty of app users and so we're always going to want to improve the site regardless of how users are accessing it.

Can you let us know what issues you're having on your browser that we may not know about? We're keen to look into it. We know about the reply issues and we're going to update users in current site stuff threads when we can.

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 22/12/2023 07:44

Still awaiting this improved app.....

LookItsMeAgain · 22/12/2023 12:41

@LilyMumsnet - I can quote posts that have quotes in them on the browser. Can’t do it on the app. That’s just one thing I can think of.
